just clarify, to place parts on the bottom of the board i just mirror the pcb board and start placing components? hitting the mirror button actually flips to the bottom side and not just flip the parts on the top?

just mirror the component and it will change the layer to the opposite side.
-> e.g from top to bottom, or from bottom to top.
Yes, just check it. 
If you like mirror more then one component - make a group and mirror this group.
The layers will change and the wire will also change inserting vias.
