Placing vias

Hi,

I'm routing a double-side board with off-grid parts. I'm using the

finest grid beacuse the layout is very simple with straight lines.

When two traces overlap I place a via to connect each other. EAGLE

connects only one trace to the via, the trace on the other layer won't

be connected.

In fact, the overlap will lead a connection when the PCB will be made,

but for EAGLE it won't.

How to force a connection between two overlapping traces?

Thank

Marco / iw2nzm

If you get your parts on-grid, it makes routing easier and the board looks nicer, too.  Normally, a 50 mil (thou) grid is used for component placement, and smaller grids are used for routing traces.  If you use metric, then I suppose the grid would be 0.5mm (?). > > When two traces overlap I place a via to connect each other. only be used to join tracks on different layers that have the same

    net name (i.e. clock)

Are you by any chance laying out a board without a corresponding

    schematic file?

    schematic file?

    Here

    http://it.tinypic.com/view.php?pic=o5do1v&s=3

you will find an image of what I'm doing.

Vertical traces (on bottom layer) are on regular 50 mil grid.

Horizontal traces are on 3.81 mm grid.

EAGLE doesn't allow to set a grid with different spacing in horizontal

and vertical so you always have a square grid. I hope in the next

version this will be added: almost every CAD have this feature.

Of course, the top layer traces won't be horizontal if routed with the

50 mil grid. And they won't cross the others if routed with the 3.81 mm

    grid.

Initially, I routed the top layer with the finest grid placing a via

where I want the connection. But this didn't happen. Of course both

    traces have the same name.

I solve routing first with the 50 mil so vias are correctly inserted,

then with the finest grid I repositioned the traces.

I don't know if there are a simpler - and more elegant - way.
