Mac 5.11 (and 5.10) frequently hangs

Former Member

Hi!

I've just started using Eagle on Mac (10.6.7, Macbook Air with 2 Gb ram, 1.4 GHz Core 2 Duo) and it frequently hangs in the library

window (add command). I have to kill the process. I've waited for 30 minutes which seems "long enough" for a library lookup:-)

One that makes it hang every time is "resistor"; I tried downloading the updated resistor_3rdPin_v20.lbr but I get same result.

For these two, I cannot even click on the arrow to expand the library view with the components. (Naturally, I can do so on all the other

libraries I've tried, including the other resistor-libraries.)

Any hints?

I'm going to try this on a Windows machine to see if that works, but that's not really a solution for me.

I'm going to try this on a Windows machine to see if that works, but

that's not really a solution for me.

I use a Mac for major design and it can work fine.  The issue is probably

that you have lots and lots of libraries currently being "used".  See "help

use" for more details, but in general this allows EAGLE access to a subset

of the available libraries.  When you open the ADD dialog it first has to

scan all the libraries that are used and populate the list of all the

possible devices that you could add.  If you happen to have a network share

mounted in there then it will take even longer.

As a test, type "use -*" from the command line.  This will clear out the

use list so that nothing is available.  Then click on ADD.  If the dialog

comes up pronto then it's because it has nothing to search through--there

is nothing in the list.  You can type "use *" to get back to default if you

    want to.

Then add back the libraries you actually want to use.  Now it will only

search through those when populating the list in the ADD dialog.

Better yet, never use a component out of the libraries supplied.  For one

reason, they could change when you upgrade and then your design just

    changed, perhaps without your knowledge.

Create your own library and then copy anything you want to it.  Then only

    use that library.

We only have one library for all of our boards and it works very well.

Think of a naming convention before you start this as you will need it if

it becomes large.  We have 1000's of parts in our library by now and with

our naming convention you can easily find anything you want if you know the

    magic decoder ring image

    Good luck,

    Cheers,

    James.

    Hi,

what happens when you delete or remove the library from this directory?

Does it work then? Loos as if there is a problem in this library file....

I followed the other response and did "use -*" and then I tried opening

    the resistor.lbr library.

Works fine as far as I can tell.

However, when I put it back and did "use resistor.lbr" followed by

    "add", eagle hangs as soon

as I click on resistor.lbr. It even hangs when I do "add" and click on Cancel.

However, I can do "add r-eu_r0805" and add devices to my schematic.

Something is wrong in the library viewer.

Anyway, I have none of these issues in the in the windows version.

Is there anything I can send you to help you pin this down?

Could you please send me the library file that makes problems and

the configuration file  .eaglerc  which should be in your home

    directory?

Send it to the email address mentioned in the signature.
