Symbols, Package, Devices Editing ?

Former Member

Hello All

I am new to the community and software. I have some Q,s and hope for some A's!

While creating a schematic, symbols, packages, and devices it seems to be way

to difficult (remember I'm new at this). While placing a component in my schematic

I get this huge assortment of libs (very nice) that has almost what I want. It will have

the schem symbol that I want, but the package footprint isn't. Is there an easy way

to pick a generic symbol, and then a package you want, and then associate the two

to make a device...correct?

Respectfully

One way to do that is to make a new temporary library.  It starts out

empty.  Then drag and drop devices and/or packages into this temporary

library.  Now play around with editing in that new library to make a

device your really want, either by starting out with an existing

device you copied there, or by making a new device to which you add

existing symbols and packages and then connect them up.  Once you get

what you want, copy the finished device to a more permanent library.

That will take only the symbols and packages you need for that one

device.  Watch out for name conflicts if you copy the resulting device

back into a library that already has devices, symbols, or packages

with the same name (if you made any changes to them).  I generally

don't change any of the Eagle libraries because otherwise it is

impossible to maintain them through a version update on Eagle.  So I

make a custom library, usually one for every project I am working on.

    Hi,

    I tried that method - didn't work.

What Eagle version do you use? I have 5.11 version here.

The description Robert Scott gave was good and it works as described with

v5.12  on  Windows. Version 5.11 was no different in this area.so should

    work also

I have done that in 5.11, it worked fine for me.  One thing to be aware of

(I don't have Eagle running right now) - you can add search paths for

libraries in the options.  That lets you put your libraries that you have

created in a different location than the Eagle libraries so they are safe

from upgrades etc.  You can have your libs either under your personal

directory or somewhere else on the disk, but they can be in a different

location which means you don't delete/overwrite them with Eagle.

Hmmm - for some reason I can't find an edit button ... need coffee I guess

.. anyway, here is a link to creating your own library part at

Instructables that I found helpful in the past.  There are also some out

there on modifying an existing library.
