Just want to put parts on the board

Former Member

Brand new to Eagle but have used other tools. Want to lay out a board directly without creating a schematic. I cannot see how to put down an IC socket from the libarary. Pads and holes work fine but no parts.

- When I select  Library > Use and select "ic-package.lbr" nothing opens.

- When I select Library > Open, I can get the attached window but it is not clear how to drop a socket on the board.

Help please!

You need to create a schematic, and ADD the part to the schematic...you will not be allowed to place the part in the board editor...See notes on Forward & Back Annotation...

I am l not seeing the logic in this.  I can create a board in layout mode - please see attached. Why would Eagle tie my hands and not let me add a part?  This makes no sense.   These are *not decisions Eagle should make, they belong to the designer.

Why do you have issues with creating a schematic?

You need to work with the tool or find one that fits your purpose better.

I can give you advice on how to work with this tool, as I have worked with it for about 11 years now, creating hundreds of pcb's...

I am with you on this point though, you should be allowed to at least switch off Forward/ Back annotation if you so wish, perhaps someone will take your suggestion...

I can see no reason why you should not be able to, and I have tried to see if I could, even went back to version 5...no luck!

Perhaps someone else here knows a way to turn off the FB annotate?

You do not have to create a schematic. Assuming the library of interest is

USEd (Greeen dot beside it when viewed in the Control panel) you can add

packages directly to the board. You dont add ,say, a 1N4001 diode, instead

you select the correct package for the diode. From the board you select ADD.

The USEd libraries will be preesent and from there you find the  package of

interest and ADD it to the board. Once enough packages are placed on the

board you use SIGNAL to connect pads. Then you ROUTE the traces.

    How?

I have tried to add a package in the board editor, all I get is an error message ' Can't backannotate this operation, please do this in the schematic!'

    What did I miss?

The schematic would need to be closed and consistency will be lost.
