How to convert Eagle v4.0 files to 6.4?

Former Member
Former Member over 12 years ago

I have some Eagle files (ver. 4.0.9, I think) that I'd like to be able to open (at least the schematics) in Eagle 6.4.0.  When I try opening them, I get the following error:

"Eagle for Mac OS X can't update file '<filename'>

(data structure is older than version 4.11"

I don't have ver. 5 or other versions of Eagle that might be able to open these files.

I can't find any ULP's or other ways for converting them, and the Eagle manual, update file, and readme doesn't tell me how to convert them either.

Suggestions?

Earlier versions of Eagle are here.

    ftp://ftp.cadsoft.de/eagle/program/

I think if you go to 4.16 first and save the file there then v6 will open

    the files.

    All the best

I downloaded the 4.16r2 Mac version from there, opened it under X11, and it gave the same error.

Is there a ULP or app for converting the earlier files (4.0.9) to 4.11 or later format?  Or something else I'm missing?

    thanks - Bill

Imho there was a version border between v.4.0x and 4.1x .

Anyway there are some ulp's at

    ftp://ftp.cadsoft.de/eagle/userfiles/ulp/

    check for updatemanager files like

    updateman_to_4.14.zip

    updateman_to_4.14.zip.INF

    or similar.

Make backups of your files before!

[I might be wrong with the following sentences, but THINK that they're

    correct]

As far as I know, EAGLE didn't EXIST for the Mac before version 4.11 (or

something like that). Therefore, the CadSoft guys apparently didn't

implement any reading algorithms for files before that version. Windows

and Linux versions CAN read those files, though.

It would be nice if the Windows and Mac algorithms could also be

implemented for the Mac (by CadSoft), since there are obviously people

who PREVIOUSLY used EAGLE under Windows/Linux (because it didn't exist

for the Mac) and NOW use a Mac (because the like it) and want to read

their old files. Having to install an OLD version on an additional

NON-Mac and opening and saving the files there is quite definitely NOT

    the most user-friendly method.

Implementing these reading algorithms shouldn't be difficult, because

the Windows/Linux versions already HAVE them, and they have probably

only been thrown out of the Mac version via some conditional compilation.

This solution worked great.  As a Mac user, I was able to open the older file and library versions with PC version 4.16 using "Save As".  After that they opened in Mac version 6.5 without any issues.
