The Eagle Freemium license appears to have deactivated after a couple of days - Why & how to fix it?

I installed Eagle about a week ago and started working on a schematic. Now when I open Eagle, I am prompted with how I would like to run it just as it did the first time I ran it. I select the Freemium license button and enter my code again but I am prompted that the code has already been used and cannot be activated from this machine. I am trying to learn how to use Eagle and get a board made but this sure is not helping. I intend to purchase Eagle but I am loosing confidence in the product.

Is there a way to rectify this issue?

BTW: I requested another code from http://www.element-14.com/eagle-freemium and got the same one that was generated earlier. I have not changed any hardware configuration on my PC. The only software change that I am aware of is Java updated to version 7 update 51.

    Hi Richard,

I hope you're doing well. The Freemium ties to the MAC address of one of

the peripherals on your laptop. If you had a Wifi dongle or some sort of

dongle attached to your laptop at the time of installation its very

possible EAGLE is tied to that peripherals MAC address. In that case

said peripheral needs to be connected to the computer whenever you're

    going to use EAGLE.

I'm under the assumption that you're running EAGLE on a laptop which may

not be the case. In order to get a new Freemium code you would have to

    register a different e-mail with element-14.

    Jorge,

Thanks for your response but I am running Eagle from a desktop with a hardwired connection so the MAC Address has not changed. The desktop has no other network adapters so something else is going on here.

Instead of selecting the option of freemium, (if you do not wish to pay) select the Run as freeware option. You can use the version as long as you want but with limited features like you can design only a two layer board and you can design a board size only of around 5*5 cm.

I selected the freeware option and now I am having an issue with my schematic components not being on the 0.1 grid. I have to ctrl + click each component to get new wires to connect to pins. This messes up the layout of the wires that are already connected. Quite the mess and a waste of time.

There appears to be a serious bugs in this application. I know a lot of people use this and it appears to be one of the most popular software for circuit layout and board design. The price suggests that this software is top notch but my experience so far is not on par with the community. I do plan to purchase this software as the freeware version seems to be too limiting but I want to have some confidence in it before shelling out some money for it.

Sorry to be so negative but I am really trying to get some work done but this is becoming more of a frustration than anything. For the first few days everything was fine then this issue with it no longer being licensed has caused other issues.

I got another key for another machine and will move my work there. Hopefully it will work there so I can get this project done. I hope when I purchase a license I will not have these kinds of issues.

BTW: My original request for a key was on 27 Feb. I started having issues on 5 March. I have not been able to work on my project everyday during this time but most everyday.(Less than 1 week.)

Well, it looks like I cannot use the other machine. I had used a different email to obtain a key and it accepted it the first time. I just went to start Eagle again and it is prompting me for the code again and when I reenter it it says that it is in use on another machine.

Please have someone look into this as this is a confirmed issue. I am certain I am not the only one getting this error. If you can't tell I am starting to get rather frustrated.

    Hi Richard,

I hope you're doing well. I think some clarification is in order. First,

a freemium code can only be used once, it can not be moved between

machines. If you're using something like Windows 7, it may not be

allowing to write a key file in the program files x86 folder.

Try this, uninstall EAGLE and then reinstall it in the Documents folder

instead of the Program files(x86) folder that way it's free from any

    tampering by Windows.

At that point you may have to get another freemium code, but that would

be it. Keep in mind that the freemium is not to be used for commercial

purposes(aka generate money), only for educational or evaluation purposes.

On the schematic, you should always use a 0.1" grid otherwise you'll run

into the issues you're experiencing to get things to connect. This isn't

a bug caused by the Freemium issue your experiencing, its how EAGLE works.

I've run into this several times with the Freemium edition. The only way to fix it that I've found is to get another code using a different e-mail address. This generally happens every 7-14 days.

Apparently they are tying the license to something in the computer that changes over time but I have not figured out what that is. Certainly the MAC addresses of the built-in wireless and wired card have not been changing. In fact I don't think it could be the MAC address that they are tying to because if it was they would not let you get another code--they would look at the MAC address and decide that you already used up your Freemium rights for that machine.

This actually scares me since I was planning to purchase the Hobbyist edition. But if the same bug is present in the Hobbyist edition that means I will constantly be having to get new codes from Eagle which will be a real pain.

    Hi Steven,

The freemium license is the only one that ties to a Mac Address. The

main problem with that is if for example you had a wireless dongle

plugged into your computer at the time of installation. If EAGLE picks

up that dongles MAC address, then in order to use EAGLE the dongle will

always have to be plugged into the computer in order to work.

The other licenses rely on a 2 part encryption scheme to unlock the

license so you wouldn't have to deal with this if you used the hobbyist

    license.

If it's tied to the MAC address, I suppose that means that you can never run it in a VM.

Tried to install into a VM myself (that's the "machine" we use for other CAD/CAM work - it runs on a Hyper-V Server). Unfortunately that's the only system we're allowed to install CAD software on.

Would not install properly - gave me the error message that it "could not install the license, please contact CADSoft"

I guess I can't use Eagle, then. We have a requirement that all software in our shop is desktop-virtualized.
