The Eagle Freemium license appears to have deactivated after a couple of days - Why & how to fix it?

I installed Eagle about a week ago and started working on a schematic. Now when I open Eagle, I am prompted with how I would like to run it just as it did the first time I ran it. I select the Freemium license button and enter my code again but I am prompted that the code has already been used and cannot be activated from this machine. I am trying to learn how to use Eagle and get a board made but this sure is not helping. I intend to purchase Eagle but I am loosing confidence in the product.

Is there a way to rectify this issue?

BTW: I requested another code from http://www.element-14.com/eagle-freemium and got the same one that was generated earlier. I have not changed any hardware configuration on my PC. The only software change that I am aware of is Java updated to version 7 update 51.

I've run into this several times with the Freemium edition. The only way to fix it that I've found is to get another code using a different e-mail address. This generally happens every 7-14 days.

Apparently they are tying the license to something in the computer that changes over time but I have not figured out what that is. Certainly the MAC addresses of the built-in wireless and wired card have not been changing. In fact I don't think it could be the MAC address that they are tying to because if it was they would not let you get another code--they would look at the MAC address and decide that you already used up your Freemium rights for that machine.

This actually scares me since I was planning to purchase the Hobbyist edition. But if the same bug is present in the Hobbyist edition that means I will constantly be having to get new codes from Eagle which will be a real pain.

    Hi Steven,

The freemium license is the only one that ties to a Mac Address. The

main problem with that is if for example you had a wireless dongle

plugged into your computer at the time of installation. If EAGLE picks

up that dongles MAC address, then in order to use EAGLE the dongle will

always have to be plugged into the computer in order to work.

The other licenses rely on a 2 part encryption scheme to unlock the

license so you wouldn't have to deal with this if you used the hobbyist

    license.

    Jorge Garcia

If it's tied to the MAC address, I suppose that means that you can never run it in a VM.

Tried to install into a VM myself (that's the "machine" we use for other CAD/CAM work - it runs on a Hyper-V Server). Unfortunately that's the only system we're allowed to install CAD software on.

Would not install properly - gave me the error message that it "could not install the license, please contact CADSoft"

I guess I can't use Eagle, then. We have a requirement that all software in our shop is desktop-virtualized.

    Hello Sam,

The Freemium is tied to a MAC address none of our other versions of

EAGLE are though. So if you want try the freeware and you'll see that it

works just fine. The pro, standard, and Light versions will also work

because they are not dependent on MAC address.

Let me know if you need any help.

    Best Regards,

    Jorge Garcia

    Hello, Jorge.

Just for grins, I decided to try again.

This time, I copied the ZIP onto the virtual HD of the running machine and tried it from there.

Well, it worked. Apparently, the "virtual" MAC address was enough to satisfy the installer after all.

We'll see how it behaves when run in a virtual environment. That's the important test.

    Thanks,

    ~Sam
