Newbie Questions - Eagle Version 4.16. (Hobby Version )

KeithSloan
KeithSloan over 16 years ago

1)I have copied a similar device to the one I wish to create to my user

library, but I cannot add or delete any pins/pads despite disconnecting

them. Page 244 of the manual says that I need to remove the package.

Which I assume means I have to start again with the package. Is there a

way to avoid this?

2) When drawing wires for symbols and packages is there a way to

temporarily turn off the snap to grid?

Many Thanks

Keith

I don't know if this addresses your first question precisely - but take it

    for what it's worth.

Lets say you have a component that you need several versions of, with minor

differences. A good example could be a switch with 6 contacts that you only

want five connected - but all possible combinations need be made.

Approximately twenty combinations? ( This is not a math lesson, twenty is

    close enough.)

Rather than start from scratch to make each individual combination:

Create one version, give it an appropriate name, and save it. Create a

temporary library, and copy the component there. Make the necessary changes

but - rather than remove unwanted pins and add new pins, you move the

unwanted pins to where they are needed, renaming them. Make appropriate name

changes to the symbol, device, and footprint; whatever is edited. Then, copy

the new component to the original library. Two down, eighteen to go.... . Do

this as many times as necessary. Of course, it only works if the total

number of pins stays the same.

It's a klunky, and round-about way to get a job done, and it can be tedious.

But if Eagle won't let you make desired changes to an existing device, it

might be time saving work-around - depending on the complexity of the device

    you are operating on.

    ****************

On your second question - I think the answer is no.  You will always start

or end on grid so the best you can do is to change the grid to some multiple

of the default grid to accomodate the line. You may want to create a script,

or else use the "Options > Assign" function to quickly shift between

alternate grids. If you need help with that, then ask here or send me a PM.

    1) The "formula" is: symbol plus package equals device.

That means that you can not edit a package or symbol that ist

"connected" (in use) with a device. If you delete the device, the

correspoding package / symbol is free and you can edit it.

2)In constructing symbols you should allways stay on standart grid to be

    compatible with other libraries.

When creating packages you should first check the datasheet if the

numbers are in inch or millimeters and set a suitable grid. If you then

set the alternate grid value to 10 ore more times smaller there should

be no problem to construct what ever you want.

Besides, if your construction is not too exotic you should find a

suitable package in ic-package.lbr or ref-packages.lbr which come with

    eagle.

if you just want finer resolution in your symbol or package drawing,

hold down the alt key and you will be switched to a finer grid for

drawing. but use the standard grid when you place pins and pads or you

will have a lot of trouble making connections.
