Is it possible to delete part of the silkscreen of a parts footprint...?

Former Member

I'm working with a design that needs to be 10cm on the x axis. My only issue is that one of the footprints has a silkscreen that measures 10.2cm. Is there any way I can cut off the last .2 cm of that footprint without editing the part? Is there a gerber editor? Some way within Eagle? Any help appreciated!

I've circled the area I'd like to "erase" on the right side of the board. .2 cm shaves off about to the right side of the pin labels, plenty of room. I have no need for the pin labels for that row.

you can use the smash function to separate names and values from footprint. and then individually manipulate.

but you will probably have to edit the footprint from the looks of things.

Hmmmm ok thank you for the reply. Any idea if there is a gerber editor that could just "cut off" that area? I really want to avoid editing the package as I assume I'll have to re-route this board.

How important are the looks of your board? any silkscreen outside the board outline will just be cutoff anyways.

Its best practice to finish editing before you generate the gerbers.

I'm not concerned with the looks at that part of the board. My fab house wont accept it the way it is though and another house is about 40% more expensive. Not the end of the world if I have to chose another house, but it'd be nice if I could just shave off that .2cm without extensive rework.

The solid white line of the board outline can be moved simply by dragging it to the desired position.

Hmmm ok I'll move the boundary and see if they'll accept it like that. If not, I'd rather pay a little more than rework this board. Thanks for the help!

    .

Really, it is easy to modify your current board using Eagle.

It looks like your board outline and a few connectors holes etc are a

    package.

    Often done for Arduino shields.

So make a copy of the that package in your library and then modify that

    copy.

After that is done and saved, back in the board editor REPLACE the

current part with the modified version.

Although, as someone else has already said, it's not normally necessary

to trim the silk screen because the board house usually do it anyway, I

have in the past doctored a few Gerber files for this purpose using a

combination of "gerbv" (a free Gerber viewer/editor) and a text editor.
