ULP: how to open a library when ULP was started in a schematic??

I'm thinking  that you may get what you are after by right clicking the

symbol in the schematic and selecting 'open device'. Running a ULP at

that point is simpler. Explain more about you case. I'll write as much

as you write.

I'll explain a bit more what I want to try to achieve.

I want to write an ULP that performs a diff between the parts/devices/footprints in a schematic/board and the libraries.

In order to do this, the ULP must be started in the console of the schematic/board because we need to have access to all the parts/devices used in the schematic.

Also we need to have access to all properties and attributes of these parts/devices.

Once we have this access (which is easy when you start the ULP in the console of the schematic or board), we need to have access to

the libraries to compare the properties of the parts in the schematic/board with the parts in the libraries.

I can have access to parts and properties of a library when I start tyhe ULP in the console of a library.

So, the question is, how to open a library from within an ULP that has been started in a schematic or board.

you would need to exit the ulp, open the library editor and start the

ulp again (or an second ulp) there.

exiting the ulp in the schematic and opening the library editor could

be done with exit("edit libname;");

But I see no way the automaticaly start the ulp this way.

You can write multiple commands in the exit string, separated by semicolon.

You an do that when typing commands too.

There are few ways to approach this:

1. Using two ULPs.

  (a) Start the first in the schematic and gather all the required  info

    which you place in a file (my_file.txt)

  (b) Exit the first ulp which calls the second ulp.

   "Run 2nd_ULP my_file.txt"

(c)Use my_file.txt to locate the library names/devices/symbols/packages

of interest

(d) compare the results

2. Using 1 ULP

  This is the same as using two but all the code is in one ULP.

  (a) You sense when you are in the schematic and run that code portion.

  (b) Exit the first ulp which first opens the library editor and then

calls itself in the library this time.

  (c) the library part of the code runs

3.  Using 1 ULP - analyse the xml of the schematic which has all the

device information and compare with the xml of the libraries

I hope this gives you some ideas.

Thanks Warren, your solution works.

However, it wil not win a "beauty contest". It's more a kind of a hack.

This is not your fault ofcourse. It's because of the limitations of Eagle & ULP.

I'm not sure about the speed of opening and closing many different libaries (imagin you have a big design).

Also, if an intermediate file is necessary to temporary store the properties of all the parts,

why not just read directly from the xml files?

So, I decided not to write an ULP. Instead, I'm going to write it in C.

Just a minor comment to that.

Of course you can do it all with one single ULP. It causes a tidyer ulp

folder. You simply pass some self interpreting arguments via argv,argc.

(Note:argv[0] is the ulp name itself so we can use this to rerun ourselves

even if the ULP gets renamed):

It runs on Linux but it's opensource, so if you feel like, you can modify it to make it work on Mac or Windows.

but we have access to the entire database schematic from BRD console,

I myself had the same kind of problems:

this following code independently of the calling consol type (Schematic

or board) execute PCBJob() function in BRD environement and SCHJob

function in the schematique environement
