How does one place a label above a wire and not exactly on it ?

Former Member
Former Member over 10 years ago

Hello.

When placing a label on a wire in schematic, the label is on the same grid as the wire, with no offset.

It's really tedious (to say the less) to have to move every label using an alternate grid or using the <info> tool.

Is there a way to have every label placed say 10 mils above the wire it is placed on ?

Thanks for any suggestion.

Jacques.

or write an ULP to do what you want. It esentially is a script of commands you can repeat.

    Hi Jacques

If I understand your need correctly, you are happy to dump the net LABEL on

the end of the wire initially but want a quick way to move them all up a

    equal amount.

This technique groups all the net labels and moves them all together. You

can group as many as you need to move.

    (1) Hide all the layers except the 'names' layer.

    (2) Group all the labels. You can safely include the visible device names

as you select the Labels as they will not be included in the group because

    they do not have origins.

    (3) Display all the layers again. Easily done by typing DISPLAY LAST into

    the command line

    (4) Move the group the amount you need

The move  will respond to your grid settings so set the alternate grid to

    something sensible like 25mil

    Thanks Clem and Warren.

Of course this will get me what I need...

But I was actually thinking of a more "automatic" solution, like having a default offset for labels, making their anchor ON the wire, but offseting the text by a fixed (user defined ?) value, like 5 mils or so.

This is really one aspect of Eagle I do not like at all : there is always something you need to program or script to get what you want. I use such tools to win time, not to loose time doing things that should be implemented in the software.

Anyhow thanks again for taking the time to answer.

Your welcome. I wish I had the power to change rather than work around things too.

That's precisely the motivation for Free-as-in-Freedom software.

    John,

Yes, free-as-in-freedom is an appealing concept, but when you have to invest hours or even days to get things done, things that would normally have taken 3 clicks elsewhere, you soon find yourself working overtime like a slave...

You load sixteen scripts, what do you get
Another day older and later in dev'
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to that Eagle's code

and in Eagle freedom is a fuzzy concept, else we would also be able to correct all those weird things : I would like to call things by their proper name for example. A wire is a wire, not a line. A track is a track, a net is a group of connected wires and pins, and so on.

All those scripts and ulp's are but crutches to make Eagle walk instead of crawling... I tought it would fly ?
