Install Eagle 4.09 on Win7 x64

Hello,

Does anyone have experience installing / running Eagle on Windows 7, 64 bit

edition?. The Cadsoft site mentions Windows 7 for 5.x series but not

specifically 32bit or 64bit systems. I currently use 4.09 professional which

won't install. Using a compatibility mode and/or running as administrator

doesn't help. I now use Windows 7 XP mode (Virtual PC) and that seems to

work fine, but i'd rather use native Win7 install (it's a bit quicker

starting / closing).

So maybe it's time to upgrade to 5.x (I'm a hobbyist; it's a lot of

money...), but, of course, only if it runs without problems on W7 64bit.

Richard

I believe some of the older versions (don't remember which ones) could

be downloaded as a .zip file in addition to the installer. Possibly

due to problems with the installer.

What happens if you take the entire installed Eagle package from your

virtual XP, copies it to Win7, and runs it there? Worth a try.

I looked into that; it seems to be for 4.1x only. I've tried extracting the

WinZip selfextracter file manually, but that didn't help either: when i try

to run the included "setup.exe", Windows explicitly tells me it's not

compatible with the version of windows I'm running; I should ask the

manufacturer for the x86(32-bit) or x64(64-bit) version according to the

windows version i'm using. At least that's a very clear error message; I've

seen worse.... So maybe it just ends there?

mhhh, i don't think i'm ready to try that yet.... seems like a lot that can

go wrong. If it comes to that, i'll probably just use it under XP mode. Or

    update.

    Anyway, thanks for the input.

I would think it could work quite easily that way. I used the same

trick to get the Xilinx FPGA development tools to work in Win7, back

when Win7 was still a release candidate only.

Eagle isn't integrated much into the operating system, so a simple

copy of its entire directory could very well be all that is needed.

I've just made a few tests with 4.09 here. I can't install it either.

And, just as you, I tried to extract the installer files, and that (as

you already know) didn't help either.

But then I downloaded a nice little program called Universal

    Extractor, from here:

    http://legroom.net/software/uniextract

And with this, I could then extract the data.z file from the installer

files. This gives me all the files the installer would normally put in

"Program Files". Going to the bin dir and running eagle.exe does seem

to start a 4.09 Eagle that works mostly ok. The help system doesn't

seem to be working, but the rest looks fine.

Why don't you update to the latest version of the 4.x series?

    4.16r2 I think it is...

    So don't do that.

I hope Cadsoft doesn't waste time even thinking about problems in old

versions if they have been addressed in newer versions.

Why don't you update to the latest version of the 4.x series?

    4.16r2 I think it is...

Because you can't... Starting with 5.0 they changed the upgrading scheme.

Now, when you own a license for 5.0, you can upgrade (at no cost) to 5.9. In

the 4.x days you could only upgrade from 4.00 to 4.09 or (if you bought a

licence for 4.1) from 4.10 to 4.19 (4.16r2 being the latest).

It's a pity, but that's just the way it is.

    I'm speechless ....., that's real thorough research..... Thank's! .  I know

that the help system won't work 'out of the box' but i think Microsoft

released a way to make it  work a while back. Anyway, I'm using the program

for so long now, I can't even remember when i last looked at the help files.

I'll try (this week) and see what I come up with. I'll report back.

Just as a sanity check (if I can't make it work...), did you use the 64bit

    edition, to test this?

Are you really sure?  Our first Eagle licenses were version 4 shortly after

it came out I think, around 2001.  I don't remember paying for any upgrades

until version 5.  Maybe Cadsoft closed down version 4 upgrades after

version 5 came out?  If so, I couldn't blame them.  They don't make any

more money on people who stick with version 4 licenses, and it probably

becomes a support liability.  All those many man hours developing the

software you get to use have to be paid for somehow.

Yes, I'm sure about that. I don't think it was really communicated to the

users, but I once asked a question in the betatest group, because I saw a

new 5.0 version was named 5.1 and not (as I would expect at that time) 5.01.

I think it was Klaus Schmidinger who responded that they had indeed changed

the version numbering and with that the way you paid for a license. It seems

that the oldest post in the betatest group is about 1 year old, so I can't

    find it anymore.

    So don't do that.

As I wrote in my first post, I'm not against upgrading. But I use Eagle for

what is basically a hobby and upgrading costs real money. So if there are no

other (viable) options I'll probably upgrade.

It still would be nice to hear if people are actually using Eagle 5.x with

the 64bit edition of Win7, though.
