Install Eagle 4.09 on Win7 x64

Hello,

Does anyone have experience installing / running Eagle on Windows 7, 64 bit

edition?. The Cadsoft site mentions Windows 7 for 5.x series but not

specifically 32bit or 64bit systems. I currently use 4.09 professional which

won't install. Using a compatibility mode and/or running as administrator

doesn't help. I now use Windows 7 XP mode (Virtual PC) and that seems to

work fine, but i'd rather use native Win7 install (it's a bit quicker

starting / closing).

So maybe it's time to upgrade to 5.x (I'm a hobbyist; it's a lot of

money...), but, of course, only if it runs without problems on W7 64bit.

Richard

What happens if you take the entire installed Eagle package from your

virtual XP, copies it to Win7, and runs it there? Worth a try.

mhhh, i don't think i'm ready to try that yet.... seems like a lot that can

go wrong. If it comes to that, i'll probably just use it under XP mode. Or

    update.

I would think it could work quite easily that way. I used the same

trick to get the Xilinx FPGA development tools to work in Win7, back

when Win7 was still a release candidate only.

Eagle isn't integrated much into the operating system, so a simple

copy of its entire directory could very well be all that is needed.

I've just made a few tests with 4.09 here. I can't install it either.

And, just as you, I tried to extract the installer files, and that (as

you already know) didn't help either.

But then I downloaded a nice little program called Universal

    Extractor, from here:

    http://legroom.net/software/uniextract

And with this, I could then extract the data.z file from the installer

files. This gives me all the files the installer would normally put in

"Program Files". Going to the bin dir and running eagle.exe does seem

to start a 4.09 Eagle that works mostly ok. The help system doesn't

seem to be working, but the rest looks fine.
