Open Sch & Brd files together

k.portman
k.portman over 15 years ago

Is there a way to open an existing Sch & Brd file together, by default.

When I double click either Sch or Brd file name on the Eagle Control

Panel it asks "Do you also want to load xxx.brd?" (or xxx.sch). I always

respond Yes, sofar never had a need to respond No.

Is there a eaglerc.usr setting to force (or make as default behaviour)

the opening of Brd & Sch files together. If not, could it be

implemented. Much requested for!!!

Not sure about a USR, but if you make the project current, it will open both

    when you start Eagle.

Start board and schematic, then run an ERC that compares board and

schematic. If board and schematic are consistent, save board and

schematic (both have to be loaded for this). If you now close your

project and re-open it, EAGLE should load both files without comment.

and if by chance you double click on a new file (from USB/an other

partition/folder etc) to open with Eagle, it will stupidly:

    1. open your old sch or brd file

    2. ask you if you want to load the other file too

    3. only then will load the file on witch you double-clicked

    4. on close, that new file will be saved as "active schematic/board", so if

you start Eagle and click on dot next to your project, it will search for

the file from  rom USB/an other partition/folder etc.

3 stupid (and wrong!!!) things in this behaviour!

Well this is no problem at all, if you don't use the Windows Explorer

for opening EAGLE files. Why don't you start EAGLE and load the files

with File/Open? Or am I to old-fashioned here?

Appreciate all the feedback... but my problem is not in making Sch & Brd

consistent. It's a more practical problem / annoyance / suggestion for

    making design navigation easier...

I tend to keep several designs in a single Eagle Project folder (maybe

several versions of the same board). Some of my systems are composed of

several boards (front panel + back plane). I would keep all such designs

under the same Eagle Project folder.

I often have to navigate between these designs, or maybe even check some

older versions. I open the designs by double clicking on either Brd or

Sch file on Eagle Control Panel (under Projects). In this scenario Eagle

always asks a confirmation to open the respective brd/sch file. I alwaus

want to open both, never just the odd brd/sch alone. How can I achieve

this without having to answer Yes to the (redundant) "Do you also want

    to load brd/sch" question?

Probably because it's a matter of convenience, though Winbloze Explorer

doesn't have to be the launch location of choice.  It could be a GUI

frontend to a change management system like Case tools or Perforce.

In any case, the files that are open when you close an Eagle project

will be the files that are opened when you open the project.

So, instead of double-clicking on the schematic or board, try

double-clicking on the the project file eagle.epf.  Then open the

schematic, board, cam file, library (whatever) that you want to open by

default.  Last, go to the Eagle Control Panel and close the project -

not Eagle - just the project.  This will save the screen location,

window size, and stackup (which window is on top) in the project file.

Now, when you double-click on the eagle.epf file, everything comes up as

    you had left it.

You may have to add ".epf" to your file associations to get Winbloze (or

is it "Windoze"?) to launch eagle.

    Enjoy,

        - Chuck

Maybe with a new line in the eaglerc.usr like:

    AutoOpenSameNameBrdAndSchWithoutAsk = "1"

You might want to add another layer of organization underneath your

    eagle project folder.

    MyProject/FrontPanel

    MyProject/BackPlane

Essentially one folder for each schematic.  Each folder would contain

    its own eagle.epf

I see what you're trying to do - double-click a schematic and have the

board always open as well without question, and vice versa.  The

bottom line is that it can't be done.  But using the eagle project file

eagle.epf will get you pretty close.

    Enjoy,

Yes! This is exactly what I was after. I agree that the eagle.epf

solution would get me there, but it would add a new layer of directory

structure I don't need/want. Also browsing older versions that I keep in

the same folder is still not solved.

I still don't see any need (99,9% of times) for opening just one of the

sch/pcb files. I would prefer either to have an option in the

eaglerc.usr file or maybe pressing shift or ctrl key to get the

confirmation box before opening the design files (as currently happens

    always).

Also for newbies (not my case) it would be much simpler and safer to

open both sch & brd files always. Avoiding inconsistencies between sch

    & brd files.

I agree with Kim here. A checkbox Don't ask me again on that dialog "Do

you want to open the brd/sch too" could be added.
