Open Sch & Brd files together

k.portman
k.portman over 15 years ago

Is there a way to open an existing Sch & Brd file together, by default.

When I double click either Sch or Brd file name on the Eagle Control

Panel it asks "Do you also want to load xxx.brd?" (or xxx.sch). I always

respond Yes, sofar never had a need to respond No.

Is there a eaglerc.usr setting to force (or make as default behaviour)

the opening of Brd & Sch files together. If not, could it be

implemented. Much requested for!!!

Well this is no problem at all, if you don't use the Windows Explorer

for opening EAGLE files. Why don't you start EAGLE and load the files

with File/Open? Or am I to old-fashioned here?

Because Cadsoft's choise is to NOT USE Control Panel as FILE EXPLORER, but

    as "project explorer".

I say-it for n'th times: Eagle Control Panel is an "feature" with low-to

none use, as it is now.

If there was a directory tree, or if Control Panel would display and permit

opening other files too, maybe. But for now it's not usable this way.

I want to open a file, not to open Eagle to open a file. It's a matter of

    eficiency....

This all wouldn't be any problem if EAGLE would accept ambigously named

.epf files. Then we could arrange the .epf along with the project data

in our own project hierarchy - including more than one .epf in one

    directory.

Opening a project would be done by opening the .epf by any means (for

example, double click in any file explorer or shell) - just as it is

    with any other IDE.

Also for newbies (not my case) it would be much simpler and safer to

I agree with Kim here. A checkbox Don't ask me again on that dialog "Do

you want to open the brd/sch too" could be added.

    Travis

That's a very good idea, I like it. Might though be very Windows style

(Mac & Linux users feedback needed). Obviously you would also need a way

    to somehow revert your selection.

Really?  You polled a large representative sample of users and concluded

    this?

Nobody asked me, and I always use Eagle to open Eagle files.  Eagle has to

run to display a Eagle proprietary file anyway, so I don't see a problem.

I do have Eagle wired to a Windows hot key, CTRL-ALT-C in my case.  That

brings up Eagle and its control panel, from which it's just a few arrow

keystrokes and ENTER to open the board or schematic of any of the projects.

If you open a board or schematic that way, the other is always silently

opened for you just as you want.

You do?  Can you explain a reason why you'd ever not want both the

schematic and board open together, once they both exist?

Olin, that is largely how I do it as well, however that's not how

    everyone works.

Many likely use removable media, using multiple PCs, and unless you have

eagle project folder mapped to the removable drive (which isn't a good

idea b/c removable media can come in as different drive letters) then

you have a problem: How to quickly find and open the files such that

both open at the same time and in the manner in which you want them to

(such as window size, location, and both brd and sch files automatically

opening). The main complaint I see is that the way Eagle handles this

    isn't ideal.

and if by chance you double click on a new file (from USB/an other

partition/folder etc) to open with Eagle, it will stupidly:

    1. open your old sch or brd file

    2. ask you if you want to load the other file too

    3. only then will load the file on witch you double-clicked

    4. on close, that new file will be saved as "active schematic/board", so if

you start Eagle and click on dot next to your project, it will search for

the file from  rom USB/an other partition/folder etc.

3 stupid (and wrong!!!) things in this behaviour!

Well this is no problem at all, if you don't use the Windows Explorer

Because Eagle is no file manager.

Or am I to old-fashioned here?

The real old-fashioned user doesn't use the Eagle control panel to

    navigate to a project.

The centralized organization introduces several years ago is not

    appropriate in many cases.

This also applies to many settings in the eaglerc file, e.g. the

Directories.* entries - one might want to have different path settings

for different projects. IMO these directories are no "user" settings

but "project" settings. Well - many users will use the same

directories for all projects, so it's convenient for them.

You might want to add another layer of organization underneath your

    eagle project folder.

    MyProject/FrontPanel

    MyProject/BackPlane

Essentially one folder for each schematic.  Each folder would contain

    its own eagle.epf

Often, there is no epf, e.g. when opening a sch&brd pair, which was sent

by email. In this case I very often run into the behavior as described by

    Silviu.

But that's no reason at all without a reason why a user might want to be

any need to ask and nobody would want or need to be asked again.  Can't you

see what you're saying is circular reasoning?
