Component Values on Schematic

Ok, more newbie questions.

 

I know that Eagle's philosophy is to have generic valueless components

(for instance, a generic resistor) which the user then assigns a value

to (for instance "10k") when the component is placed on the schematic.

 

However, for my business I want to generate BOMs automatically which

will then get uploaded to an ERP/MRP system with hopefully minimal hand

editing.  To achieve this it is desirable for me to create separate part

numbers for each component that correspond to my own internal part

numbering system.  Therefore, each component will have one package and

one value.  Is there a way to "hardcode" the values on each part so that

I don't have to manually go and edit it after I drop the part?  Also, in

some cases, it would be advantageous for the part to have this

pre-assigned value, but not have that value displayed on the

schematic.  For example, on a connector I might not want the part number

displayed on the schematic, but I do want it to show up in the BOM when

I run bom.ulp.  So, is there a way to have an invisible value on a part?

    Thanks Olin, that was most helpful. I agree with you on the value on/off

    being counterintuitive and difficult to remember (funny how those things

    seem to go together). The use of the value on/off has been difficult to

    grasp and I'm still not sure exactly how and when to use it. I suppose

    I'll have to resort to the manual. Great tip about not putting ">VALUE"

    in the symbol keeping the value invisible on the schematic.

    another quickie way to get a value off the schematic is to SMASH the

    part and then DELETE the value text. sometimes it comes back though...
