Best capacitor library symbol for 80-C315C104M5U from polybot project?

autodeskguest

Hi,

I am playing with the polybot project which recommends using Eagle for

developing  its  circuit  board.   The  project  using  Kemet  ceramic

capacitors 80-C315C104M5U 0.1uF as decouple capacitors for the circuit

board ICs.   The capacitor package type  is C315.  How  do I determine

which Eagle  library capacitor symbol is  the best fit to  use for the

capacitor?   The cap  has just  two wires  coming off  it  so probably

anything reasonable would work, but is there a preferred selection?

Thanks for any suggestions and pointers.

I don't know what a C315 package type is (are you sure that's not the

component designator?), but if these are really decoupling caps there is a

wide range of parts that would work well.

    Nowadays I use mostly 1uF caps for decoupling.  A 0805 or 0603 1uF cap

right at the supply pin with a short return back to a ground pin on the IC

has better characteristics than the 100nF leaded caps of a few years ago.

In any case, the point is there are many many 100nF to 1uF ceramic caps

that will fill the decoupling role.  You might as well use some that are

available, cheap, and in a common package, like 0805 or 0603.

The choice of schematic symbol is mostly one of personal preference.

There are European and US style symbols.  If you want to make the best

use of the Eagle library, then look through the rcl.lib library for a

device that has the schematic symbol you prefer and the circuit board

package that matches the capacitor you have choosen.   Everything else

can be changed (like the part value) after the device is placed into

your design.  It seems that the part you specified has leads .1"

apart.  Just look at the through-hole packages in rcl to find one that

provides this spacing and the proper clearance around the pins.  If

you cannot find a close enough match, then copy a close device into a

new temporary library and then edit that copy in the library to change

what you need.  Then copy the revised part into a custom library that

you create for this project.  But most likely you will find a stock

    part that fits your needs.

Apparently the OP wants to use through-hole caps.  The part number he

shows above can be found on mouser.

To find something suitable in the libraries

    From the Kemet data sheet:

The C315 package has the following characteristics:

    Lead spacing 2.54mm (0.1")

    Lead diameter 0.51mm (0.020")

    Package width 3.81mm (0.15")

    Package thickness Std Voltage 2.54mm (0.1") , High Voltage 3.18mm (0.15")

In the library rcl.lib select your capacitor symbol preference of either

    C-EU or C-US

From the listed capacitors the ones that fit you size requirements have the

    package C025-024X044

C025 = Capacitor with lead spacing of 2.5mm

    024X044 = tPlace depiction of package size 2.5 x 4.4mm.  This is a suitable

match for the datasheet values of  2.54  x 3.18mm.

Opening the library, check the drill diameter of the pads. In my library its

0.032" which would suit the lead diameter of 0.020".

    Hope this helps

Thanks very much for all the replies.  They are very helpful.  I think

I  understand how  you picked  out  the relevant  analogous part.   It

needed  three attributes  to match  the minimum  value or  be slightly

larger than the actual part specification.  I appreciate the pointers

    and explanation.

    Thank you.
