Eagle upgrade list

e14candies
e14candies over 10 years ago

Is there a requested list of Eagle enhancements posted or kept current?  We

want to know what issues and requests are BEING ACTIVELY addressed.  This

would help to show the roadmap.

THANKS for updating the website!! This will give new & potential users a

better impression of Eagle--more users, more $$$ to make more improvements.

    Hi,

currently there is no public list available. Version 8 is yet too

far away as to have well-grounded information what finally will be

    realized.

For the current version 7 development and its beta releases which

mainly contain bug fixes and minor improvements we have the file

HISTORY.beta that comes with the EAGLE beta package.

This informaton will be extracted into UPDATE_eng.txt (and

UPDATE_ger.txt for German language) in the final releases.

Version 7.6.0 is not too far away. It's planned to have propably

one more beta (7.5.4) which should end up in 7.6.0 soon.

    Hi Richard,

I appreciate that if v8 is quite a long way out it would be hard to publish

a meaningful list now of what features may be in it, but internally you

must have a plan for v7.x releases at least? How far do you plan to stretch

v7 and how many more releases are we likely to see in the v7 line? It would

be nice if you could publish a v7.x release schedule with at least some of

the known about new features and fixes listed against these releases. Even

if it's not 100% accurate, and you can cover this in lots of disclaimers if

needs be, it would at least give people an idea of what may be coming. Do

you think this could be possible?

    Many thanks,

    Rachael

    Hi Rachael,

there will be a 7.6.0 soon. I suppose that there won't be fürther V7

release, only if it is urgently necessary, for example in case of a

critical bug. It's planned to concentrate on V8 development from now

    on.....

    Hi Richard:

Thanks for ANOTHER rather useless response that

shows why users should probably just walk away from Eagle or just start

with something better.  Richard appears deaf to our requests for a list

even after multiple requests, sometimes for years on end.  When asked

specifically what is being done (for at least a minimal list), the

answer is essentially he doesn't know.

When he wakes up everyone will be gone from the eagle party.

    Hoyt,

thanks for your advice and analysis of the current situation.

BTW: My valuable colleague Jorge already gave an answer to your

post.Thank you Jorge for keeping the forum at its high quality level.

My reply would have been in a different way.

    Hi Guys,

I guess it's my turn to throw my hat into the ring. First off, we want

to thank everyone for submitting suggestions. It shows that you guys

care about the software and the direction it's going in, so we want you

guys to continue sending in suggestions, they are not falling on deaf

ears, we log them and assign them priorities. Just to give you an idea,

our current feature request list contains about 300 entries. Can you

guys imagine how long it would take to implement 300 brand new features

into EAGLE? We certainly have a lot of work ahead and that's thanks to

    you guys.

As to the roadmap request, there's a couple of issues with providing a

public roadmap. Regardless of how many disclaimers we would place on it,

users would still hold us to it, and it would leave a real sour taste in

their mouths(as it has) if for whatever reason we couldn't meet all the

points in the roadmap. Another consideration would be the loss of a

competitive edge, when you announce to the world everything you're going

to do competitors will usually be quick to try to either implement an

alternative or block you(this is the case for example when you announce

that you are going to support importing a competitor's file format). For

these reasons and others many companies don't release a public roadmap,

and we are one of those companies.

We don't want a repeat of V7 so we are working really hard to make sure

that V8 is truly worthwhile. Your suggestions are guiding that effort

and if I could talk about what we are planning I know this would be a

    different thread.

I know it's not the answer you guys wanted to hear, but I think having

an answer it better than no answer and feeling like you are being

ignored. We value you all a lot, so keep the comments good, bad, etc.

coming; they keep us moving forward.

    Best Regards,

    Jorge Garcia
