Manually routing from top   to bottom.

autodeskguest

Hi,

Occasionally I find myself with a red wire on the top, a blue wire on the

bottom and a yellow 'unrouted' line between the two.

How do I manually route between the two?

If I select the normal 'route' tool, click on one end, and then click on

the other end I get a trace appearing between the two ends (as expected)

but instead of getting a via appearing I get a yellow 'X'(which i think

means I'm missing a 'via') I can manually place a via on the yellow 'X' but

it doesn't seem to actually connect - I can still pick up each end of my

track and move it interdependently, and I still have the yellow 'unrouted'

line between the two.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

Try BetterTouchTool, or MagicPrefs. MiddleClick provides a 3-tap middle click. Not sure how one would middle-click-and-drag. You'd have to play with them and figure out what works best for you. On 08/06…

Rob has given you an answer. Using the middle mouse click to change layers.

In the future you may well find yourself in the same situation.

The 'X' is a zero length airwire, or to think of it another way it's a

vertical airwire. The wires that connect to that airwire are on the same

X Y  coordinate. If you then place an via at that coordinate, they

should connect. i.e. the via will be given a signal name that matches

that of the airwire and route wires.

Use the ratsnest function to have eagle re-calulate airwires and get rid

of the 'X' once the via is placed.

    FROM THE MANUAL *****************

Airwires with length of 0 (for example, from Top to Bottom layer) are

drawn as a cross in layer 19, Unrouted.

Ending a wire at the same position where another wire of the same signal

but in another layer already exists and pressing the Shift key at the

same time causes EAGLE to place a via. Otherwise it won't.

I have a Mac AirBook.  I see no mouse here.  I see no middle button on the non-mouse.

    Hi Joseph,

Manually changing layers is possible too, from the toolbar. But it sounds extremely inconvenient to want to use a CAD package without a mouse. Anything else is a compromise.

I have a multifinger-aware sensitive digital pad.  Far easier to use than a mouse, but it lacks a middle button. Otherwise, it is great.  No carpal-tunnel or other RSI (Repetitive Stress Injury).  Been there, done that with a mouse.  Nearly lost all functionality in my right hand, required surgery to fix it.

Can't you map your multifinger-aware sensitive digital pad to emulate a middle mouse button?

    Sounds limiting if you can't..

Anyway, as mentioned the toolbar is available. It doesn't require a middle mouse button. Or you could perhaps map a keyboard key to do what you want.

You could even use an external keypad to emulate a middle mouse button. So many options if your multifinger aware sensitive digital pad isn't fit for use with the CAD package.

I'd have agreed with this before I started using a Mac. The trackpad on the Macbook Pro was so good with EAGLE that I replaced my mouse with a Magic Trackpad on my iMac.

In EAGLE now you can change layers in the route command using the space bar to go through the available routing layers in the top to bottom direction or shift+space to go through the layers in the bottom to top direction. Remember that it'll now expect you to choose where to place the via before it'll let you continue routing on the chosen layer, it's not like it was pre-v8 and can take a bit of getting used to if you've used v7 or earlier a lot. As you cycle through the layers with the space bar the chosen next layer is shown in the status bar at the bottom, it's not very obvious and previously you'd have seen the obvious change in the Layer dropdown so you'd be excused for thinking nothing was happening if you were expecting the same visual feedback you were used to as it only changes there after the via is placed.

    Best Regards,

    Rachael
