Trouble copying part to l ibrary

autodeskguest
autodeskguest over 9 years ago

I'm running Eagle 4.16r2 (am I the last one?).  I created a part and

mistakenly saved it to a new library.  I'd like to move or copy it to

another one.  I open the destination library then right-click on the part

to be copied and select Copy to Library from the popup menu.  The part

appears in the board window for the destination library, but when I try to

save the part I get an error, "Can't create backup copy of file [path and

name of the destination library]."  When I click OK I get a warning, "Can't

remove old version of ."  What am

I doing wrong?

I should also point out that while Eagle lists the new library (and part)

in the Library listing of the Control Panel, and I can add the part to a

schematic, the library doesn't appear on disk with the rest of the Eagle

libraries.  You can see http://i.imgur.com/mLUpFGr.jpg that Eagle is

looking in the right place for the library (flip digits.lbr), but it's not

showing up (it should be between fifo.lbr and fox-electronics.libr).

Thanks for your help.

Some times new libraries do not appear in alphabetical order, so check

    ALL names.

Do a "use *" (use all) and check if the library is accessible now.

If you have access to the new library you can also export it as script

to a destination eagle has access to.

Open your destination library and import the script.

    Some of this should work.

No, I still have a machine with that version.

Your destination library is probably write protected. You need to tell

us what OS you're on, and where the library is stored, because your

other symptoms sound like Windows 7/8/10 peculiarities.

Thanks for the suggestions, Joern and Rob.  The library with the new part

shows up in Eagle but not in Windows Explorer (I'm running Win7 x64 Pro),

so "use all" doesn't apply.  I exported it as a script and ran it within

the destination library to produce the part, but got the same error as

before when I tried to save it.  In fact, I recreated the part from scratch

within the destination library (as I should have originally) and got the

error when trying to save, so it looks like a problem with the destination

library, which is write-enabled for all users.

This library contains all the parts I create myself so it's easy to back up

everything I create.  I had to reinstall Eagle after a system crash several

months ago and just copied the backed up library into the lib directory, so

maybe that's part of the issue.  I can access it from within Eagle and add

parts from it to a schematic, though, so it's not totally ruined.  I should

point out that the library with the new part (not the destination library)

appears with a lock icon on its name in the library list in the Use library

dialog, but this doesn't stop me from using the part in it.

    Any other tips?

Then it seems that Bob is right and it is a problem of the windows

    rights management.

Do you have full access to the directories you use for all eagle files?

Yes.  I'm the Admin and only user of the machine Eagle is installed on.

Even so. Imo after win xp all newer wins separate the users with their

    bloody rights management image

Try to start eagle as administrator (right click the icon and choose

"run as administrator" or something like that [I have "Als Administrator

    ausführen" on win81/64]
