Eagle Library

I am trying to learn Eagle by making a schematic that uses a TI OPA1632 full differential opamp. This device is not in the Eagle libraries as far as I can tell.

I am encountering TWO (2) related issues...

On the Element14 site I find a CAD file for this device and follow the instructions in a README file

1. Start Eagle

2. Select File -> New -> Library

3. In blank library window, select File -> Script      [this item does not exist. There is an EXECUTE SCRIPT option which I assume is what we want. This opens a library window]

4 Select the EDIT tab    [this is impossible as that window with that option is now covered by the library window I just opened with the EXECUTE SCRIPT]

5. Browse to the correct EAGLE script file [I do this and find the OPA1632 script where I stashed it]

6. After opening the file, the script will populate the new library

7. Use FILE -> SAVE (or Save As ..) to save the library to the desired location in EAGLE native format.

SO, after doing what is feasible, I see a large library listing with my new library included.

BUT, when I go to the schematic editor, that library is not present. I've gone around this prickly pear several times and get the same non-result.

Also, I can inspect the contents of the OPA1632  library item from that lib window, and it has the correct PCB pad. However, the schematic symbol is not useful -- a box with named signal I/Os and no pin numbers. What is desired here is the symbol we find in the data sheet -- a typical opamp triangle etc.  I tried to edit the symbol but got an error that to do so would exceed the number of pads allowed.

I really need some guidance

THanks

Gary Nelson.

    Hi Gary,

I think the issue you are now having is the library is not selected for use. You can confirm this by going to the main EAGLE Control Panel window and look at the list of libraries. You should see that all the libs have a green dot to the right hand side of them. I suspect your new lib will have a grey dot. If this is the case then simply right click on your new library and select 'Use'. The dot will go green and the library should now show up in your schematics.

    Best Regards,

    Rachael

    that's element14 for you 8-)

that sounds like you trying to add additional symbols to a device.

A part in an eagle library consists of one or more symbols and one or

    more - alternative - packages.

A device is the structure use to describe the relation between the

symbol pins and the package pads.

So to change the symbol, you need to find out its name from the device

editor, then open it in the symbol editor. There you can rearrange the

pins and decorative lines to your liking.

To see pin numbers in the symbol you have to change the visibility,

which is a property of the pin.

    Thanks. I'm making progress.

I don't know where to find DEVICE EDITOR and SYMBOL EDITOR

I need to make a custom part with an SO8 package and vendor defined pinout -- no support from vendor.

I have invoked a library item where the symbol looks ok for this app, but need to assign pin numbers, and then associate it with an SO8 pad.

    Probably obvious once you know...

It took a while to understand the UI, but now that part is becoming easy. Thanks for the help...

The library is my present challenge.

Forthcoming, I have several small odd shaped PCB outlines as DXF files that I would like to import for PCB layout. Each manufactured board wants to have several of these smaller boards routed around (with a small cutter like .1") leaving little tabs to snip off later and liberate the boards.

Should I position and define this set of sub-boards with routing before import, or are there drafting tools to do that in Eagle?

    good to here

I don't know where to find DEVICE EDITOR and SYMBOL EDITOR

the library editor provides separat sub-editors for package, symbol

and device which are often refered to as package editor, symbol editor

    and device editor
