How can I make Version 7 default in Windows 7?

autodeskguest
autodeskguest over 9 years ago

I am not an OS expert and maybe it shows image

Anyhow, because several clients of mine did not upgrade to V7 I must

also keep V6 on the computer. It rns Windows 7 64-bit Professional. Any

time I click on a *.sch file it opens it in V6. I cannot even select in

Windows to open in V7 because Eagle V7 doesn't show in the menu.

So far the only way to open such files is to fire up V7, then go through

the file open menues and open the file. Of course, this does not work

with an Eagle file attached to an email which will always open in V6.

What gives?

As I wrote, that only shows "eagle.exe" and this results in V6 being

opened. V7 does not show up. V7 can only be opened direcvtly or via the

    desktop shortcut.

click Browse to find the program you want to use, and then click Open. If no other programs are installed that are able to open the file type or protocol, your choices will be limited.)

The key is to look at shortcut to find where the program was installed to. Once that is known, the browse will allow you to follow the same paths to that program.

I know where it runs, in Program Files\Eagle7.2.0\bin. However, that

will not show up under browse. Only the V6 location does.

V6 should show up below "Program Files(x86)", not "Program Files". Are

you sure that you looked up the correct directory?

Yes, V6 must be and is in the (x86) directory but not V7. The problem is

that V7 never shows up in any default program selections. So I can't

tell Windows to always use that as the default for *.sch files. That can

make a real mess if I don't notice it and work on libraries.

May-bee I have misunderstood the problem here but Eagle 7 does not (or did not fro me, more correctly) install to program files, but it ended up directly on the root, at c:\

So right click on the schematic file, choose "open with...", make sure the "Always use the selected...." checkbox is selected and then browse manually to the bin folder and select the file named eagle (remember that in later windows the extension does not always show). Check c:\ for an eagle folder.

    EDIT: Fixed an typo

V7 installed correctly in the 64-bit section. I think Tilmann has

diagnosed the problem correctly. The fix requires a registry edit

though. Not for the faint of heart and I'll do that during a quiet phase

in case I brick the PC.

In case an engineer from Eagle is reading: This should be fixed.

Independent engineers such as consultants have to be able to run older

versions because not all their clients have the latest version.
