EAGLE vs Altium CircuitS tudio

It looks like EAGLE's newest competitor is Altium's CircuitStudio (CS)

which now sells for $995 (it used to sell for $3500 before AutoDesk bought

EAGLE). This is just a little more than EAGLE's mid-range package ($820)

and cheaper than EAGLE's full-range package ($1640). One of the features I

liked in the demo was the push-and-shove manual router. It also imports

EAGLE v6 and above files. It may have an annual subscription fee, but I

don't know how much that is.

I was wondering how AutoDesk plans on meeting this threat.

    Per the product overview:

"CircuitStudio is sold as a perpetual license for the commercial use and

includes a 1-year subscription for online services, support and updates.

Your subscription requires an annual renewal."

It runs only under Windows, and while there is a free 30-day trial there

isn't a hobbyist version. If I switch from Eagle I'll most likely go to

    KiCad.

Eagle selling out to AutoDesk followed by the new licensing scheme was

the straw that broke the camel's back for me.

I had tried KiCAD several years ago and found it not quite ready for

prime time.  I downloaded the current version to Ubuntu Linux 2 weeks

    ago.

Wow, what a few years and CERN's money can do.  Using a fairly simple

board and starting from scratch, I entered the schematic and laid out

the board in 2 days.  I'm going to do our most complex board this

week.  If that goes smoothly, I'm going to convert us over

    company-wide.

Can you elaborate on this? As far as I can tell the only change to the licensing is they renamed what the various editions were called to be in line with their other products and increased a couple of the allowed board areas on the cheaper products. For me all I can see is a company with huge resources at their disposal throwing a lot of effort into moving EAGLE forward after it had several years of resource starvation. Personally I am very happy Autodesk bought EAGLE and I can't wait to see what the next major version brings.

Anyway, good luck with your move to KiCAD, I'm sure all the resources CERN have been putting into it have made it a good product.

    Best wishes,

    Rachael
