EAGLE vs Altium CircuitS tudio

It looks like EAGLE's newest competitor is Altium's CircuitStudio (CS)

which now sells for $995 (it used to sell for $3500 before AutoDesk bought

EAGLE). This is just a little more than EAGLE's mid-range package ($820)

and cheaper than EAGLE's full-range package ($1640). One of the features I

liked in the demo was the push-and-shove manual router. It also imports

EAGLE v6 and above files. It may have an annual subscription fee, but I

don't know how much that is.

I was wondering how AutoDesk plans on meeting this threat.

I was looking for CircuitStudio's limitations while writing my previous

posting, but of course didn't find them until after I clicked "Send":

    "What are CircuitStudio's design limitations?

    CircuitStudio supports:

         Unlimited components.

         Unlimited nets.

While there are no 'hard limits' per se, the software has been

engineered to make it impractical for use with large designs. To this

end, the PCB Editor will start to exibit performance degradation when

editing designs containing 5000 pads, becoming virtually unusable with

designs containing 50,000 pads. Degradation itself takes the form of

progressive slow-down in PCB editing functions (such as routing, placing

    components, polygon pours, etc)."

    Hi Reece,

Element14 thought your replies were so good it repeated them three times

each for effect! :d I think I'll stick to Eagle Central for replying on

here as it seems they've messed things up again!

Seriously though, all good points and illustrate why it's not really a like

    for like comparison.

    Hi David,

You ask what Autodesk's plans are to meet this threat, well you should look

at some of the blog posts from Matt Berggren since they took over. He's

given more than a few hints that they're really building up the dev team

and are working on a lot of improvements in EAGLE. I'm very hopeful that

the future for EAGLE under Autodesk, with all their massive resources and

ability to finance development, will be significantly brighter then it has

been. It should be noted that Matt was with Altium before moving to

Autodesk so he's very familiar with the Altium EDA offerings.

    Best Regards,

    Rachael

    Rachael;

I forgot that Matt had been with Altium. It will be very interesting to see

what Autodesk has in store for EAGLE.
