Unable to name polygon

I'm running Eagle 4.16r2.  I've created a polygon on the top layer.  It's

the ground pad for the tab of a TO-263 package, so I want to name it GND to

connect it to my GND signal, plus turn on related features like cream etc.

When I click on the NAME button and then on the polygon, however, my system

just beeps and won't let me name it (though it lets me name the pads for

the pins).  What am I doing wrong?

    it was not until after v4 that polygons over pads to make custom pads

    arrived.

     

    Why don't you just make a large SMD pad for that tab pad.

    The Linear library has a TO-263 package 3 pin you could use or adapt.

    Thanks for the tips, Warren.  I thought of making a big pad, but I was

    trying to adhere to the datasheet which specifies a T shaped pad; a

    rectangular one would be ... imperfect.  image  As for the Linear library, had

    I known there was a TO-263 package in there I would have used it.  Now I

    need to decide whether it's easier to plug that one into my design or just

    add a big rectangular pad to it.
