Using the inner layer for more than GND and VDD

Hello,

At first thanks for your always quick and useful help.

My question: with Eagle Standard, is it possible to use one of the inner layers for some other rutes too - at least for my second voltage VCC? If yes is there any description how to do it?

Best regards

Roland

    Hi Roland,

    the Standard Edition supports up to 6 layers. Layers 1, 2, 3, 14, 15, and 16.

You have to define the Layer Setup in the Design Rules, for a 4 layer board for example (1*2+15*16).

Now the inner layers are available and you can use them for signals and/or polygons.

    Regards,

    Richard

    Hi Richard,

I use 4 layers already. At the moment the layers 2 and 3 are used ((1*2)+(3*16)) and defined as supply layers, 2 for VDD, 3 for GND.

Now I want to use the layer 2 for VDD (3,3V) and VCC (5V) and if possible for some wires too. Do I have to remove the flag 'supply layer' from layer 2?

How do I make sure (or at least can control) that the respecting vias lead to the correct layer 1-16, 1-2, 1-3....

In principe, what is the correct way to achieve this?

    Hi Roland,

remove the supply flags for the inner layer and draw polygons instead. So you can have additional wires in the inner layers. Don't mix supply layers and layers with polyons!!

You can chack the via length vi athe INFO command, and

it makes sense to set the layer color of layer 18, Vias, to the background color (DISPLAY menu, Change, Color) if you are working with  that have different lengths and shapes. In doing so it is possible to recognize layer affiliation.

    Hi Richard,

currently I don't use the layer 18 is that right anyway or a mistake? Can you explain it a bit more?

    Regards

    Hi Roland,

layer 18 contains vias. As soon as you have to change the routing layer, EAGLE will set a via automatically. Vias can have different lengths, depending on the Layer Setup in the Design Rules you can choose it.  EAGLE automatically takes the shortes possible via. The are diplayed by default as green objects in yozur drawing. You can change the layer color to background color and the vias will be displayed in the colors of the signal layers they are available. This makes it easier to distinguish.

    Regards,
    Richard
