EagleCad external wire

Hi! I'm new to EagleCad. I'm getting my first board ready to print. I have a separate circuit that I am going to need to connect to this pcb by a wire. It would be nice if I could have it wired to a hole in the board I could then solder my wire through.  How do you designate this in the software or is there a better way to do it?

    Hi Tom,

I'll chime in here, just in case you haven't already found the answer.

The best way to place a hole to solder a wire into is just the same as placing any other component. Take a look in the "Wirepad" library, and you'll find a selection of different sized holes with copper pads around them. Place one on the schematic, and it will also show up in the board layout with a connected airwire for you to route.

A second way that also works, is to do it all in the layout editor. Just place a "Via" wherever you want to solder in your wire, then either use the "Wire" tool or the "Route" and "Split" tools to connect that via to the correct a trace on your layout. You can use the "Info" tool to adjust the size and shape of the via. Doing it this way, it will not show up on your schematic.

Thanks Ray! I haven't worked with any electronics in 3 or 4 years so I'm trying to get back into it. It's a slow process so every bit helps.

Your advice is exactly what I was looking for, thank you!

    Best,

    Tom
