footprint

Hello,

I need help in creating a footprint for the inductor, PM2110 and diode, POWERDI123. Has anybody created any for these devices and is willing to share.

Thanks.

Regards,

Jaya

I don't really have any particular problem with the site; I rarely use the libraries that are there, and I'm happy to generate my own.

I was initially just saying that I've done an extensive search in the standard libraries for those footprints, and couldn't find any. The current Eagle search is a bit limiting (it's very easy to miss what you're looking for), and I've written my own search capabilities (Richard is aware of this; it was posted in another topic).

    Hi Jason,

According to the info in this link : http://www.dianyuan.com/bbs/u/68/2844001219819270.pdf , probably SOD123 could be used as a footprint for PowerDI123. The document says that Power-DI123 is drop in compatible with SOD123.

    Regards,

    Jaya

I have no problem with my libraries at all image

What I mean is if you look at one of the libraries - take the ftdichip libraries (I use FTDI chips myself, so I'm reasonably familiar with them).

    ftdichip - the description is:

UPDATE OF FTDICHIP.LBR- USB Controller from FTDI, based on the libraries ftdi3 and ft2232. With  new FTxxxR Types (QFN and SSOP Package) Uploaded by Bernhard Redemann <b-redemann at gmx.de> www.b-redemann.de
Uploaded by Bernhard Redemann <b-redemann at gmx.de>

    ftdichip-1 - the description is:

This is an update of FTDI library including the  latest USB Host VNC1L-1A chip. Schematic is same as the one in datsheet.
Uploaded by Shadab Ahmed <shadab.ahmed at bluchip.co.in>  from BluChip

    ftdichip-2 - the description is:

FTDI USB chips. Update of ftdichip-1.lbr - consistent  symbols, part prefix and other tidy ups, includes description page.  Also available from www.pcserviceselectronics.co.uk
Uploaded by Paul Carpneter <paul at  pcserviceselectronics.co.uk> from PC Services - Reading, UK

    ftdichip-3 - the description is:

Up-date symbols in according to symbols presents in  original data sheet
Uploaded by Federico Battaglin <info at febat.com> from  www.febat.com

So, here we have an existing library, ftdichip, that has been modified 4 times. So, without opening the library files, can you answer these questions:

    1. Does "ftdichip-1" include the updates of "ftdichip" here, or is it based on the original ftdichip library?
    2. Does "ftdichip-3" include the updates of "ftdichip", "ftdichip-1" or "ftdichip-2"?
    3. What were the changes made to "ftdichip-3"? Or rather: are the changes important - were some of the pins wrong, or renamed?

If the same person had updated these libraries, then the answers would probably be "yes" to the first two, and you'd be reasonably safe that the changes were important. However, since all the changes were made by different people, you don't know what they're basing it on (luckily "ftdichip-2" does say that it was based on "ftdichip-1", but that was only the user doing it).

So if I wanted to have FT2232, which library should I download? "ftdichip" does contain it, but was it updated in any of the later versions? If it was updated, why are the earlier versions present?

To me, there's just too much confusion where you have multiple versions of the same library; there's a lack of version control, and no history.

It gets a little bit more complex if I was to index all of the existing libraries on the CadSoft FTP site (and I would like to do this). Now if I was to search for one of the parts that are available in the default library, they would also be found in the updated libraries. But which one should be used? Is it important to use the latest one? Luckily I do have the capability of searching based on whether it's part of the in-built libraries, or a user-supplied library, so in this case it's not that important. But if it's in a library that isn't in-built, you'd end up with multiple selections, so, again, which is the best to use?

And then there's an issue of speed. While it is possible to have all of the libraries that are available in your library folder, the first time you open the control panel, it has to scan all the library files that are present in order create the initial tree (from experience, it only does a cursory scan - the components within each library are only scanned when you list the entries within that library). However, on my machine (quad-core 3GHz, so not terribly slow), it takes about a second or so (feels longer!) to open the 350-odd libraries I have. Adding to that list would make it slower and slower (although I don't have any idea how much slower).

IMHO the CadSoft user libaries need a bit of a clean, and anything that is useless is removed (or put into an archive location). That would present less confusion to the users.

    Hi

To avoid problems with libraries, new components or modifications to old, it is recommended that you create a library user to store frequently used components.

I suggest you to copy your old libray on the new directory.

Yes - I was about to index the 5.8 libraries this weekend, but last night I saw that 5.9 had come out, so I'll need to do that version instead image

It's a matter of copying the files over to my server, and then running a program that indexes all the information into a database which can then be queried from the web.

It can do any library (and also tell the user where they can download that library from [i.e.a library source]) - I've also indexed the SparkFun library - but the CadSoft FTP libraries really do need a bit of a clean: there's multiple versions of the same one, often with a comment to say that they added another component, or corrected a different one. Theoretically, this should retire the older versions, but they're still there...

I've also released the libraries for most of the components I've had to use, and have indexed them too (although they're not in the current index).

I did a quick search for "2110" and "123" using my Eagle search tool (which only covers the 5.6 standard libraries at this moment in time).

The only packages with "2110" in their name were SIMM connectors, and with "2110" in their description were mainly about RC6123 wave/reflow soldering packages, and some relays.

The only packages with "123" in their name were SOD-123 (probably not the same footprint), and "123" in their description wa sa 256-pin PBGA package.

All, Thanks for your suggestions. I have found the footprint on the concerned datasheets and will just create them.

    Hi Antonino,

Thanks for the info. I am a cadsoft Application Engineer at Farnell Electronics, Bangalore India. I have EAGLE installed and also have browsed through all the libraries on the cadsoft website in the download section. It does have a lot of libraries but I was not able to locate the parts which I have mentioned. Anyways, let me do more research on the websites you have mentioned. Probably that will help.

    Regards,

    Jaya
