Unknown pin error

Sparkylabs
Sparkylabs over 6 years ago

When I try to bring may schematic design into the PCB I find that a newly created capacitor gives an error. "unknown pin" well the pins are 1 and 2 in both the symbol and footprint and I have use both before so as always I am baffled.

I would attach the files but Element 14's own software file formats are not accepted and the attach functionality is scarcely functional.

Ah, yes they are missing from the PCB but I assume that is due to the error? so how do I resolve the error by adding parts that do not want to be added because of the error.

It could be the schematic symbol somehow isn't referencing the footprint correctly (or footprint not found) and so it does not get added to the PCB.

Well even changing the footprint on the symbol on the schematic does not help. What is the correct procedure for getting the design from schematic to PCB and then updating ? all other parts are working fine.

As a test try changing the footprint of the cap on the schematic document to any other 2 pin footprint you know works and then run Home | Project > Update PCB Document from the schematic. A second test would be to manually add the footprint to the PCB, make sure the cap on the schematic is using the correct footprint name and then try Update PCB Document again.

Manually placing the capacitors on the PCB worked. on running the board update it wanted to remove them so I had to untick the boxes for that operation or I'd be back to square one. i can't carry an working like this though.

If it worked manually placing them then it seems to suggest the software is having problems locating the footprint library as set in the symbol on the schematic. If you set the designator on the PCB of the manually added caps it should not want to remove them. Is the new cap footprint in the same library as you are using for other components that are working? If so check how you are referencing the new cap footprint compared with ones that are working.

For some reason the symbol type was set to mechanical. I believe it is fixed now
