v1.4 Hotfix Update Suggestions wanted here

jstrautman
jstrautman over 8 years ago

James Harriman mentioned in the discussion about not being able to create a board size based on 3D body as being a unintended bug and that the team is working on a "hotfix update" to version 1.4 to come soon.

I thought we  (the community) could start a list of items we would like to see updated as soon as possible.  These should be features that seem to hinder us as designers to designing a board quickly, efficiently, and correctly but easy enough to modify to be included in a short term software patch.

I'll kick it off by requesting that it be a priority to work on the Altium Vault Explorer search functionality.  There are many quirks with the Altium Vault Explorer, but the one that frustrates me the most is when you get many results, but can't view them because the results window is set up to automatically list a column for any parameter that was set up for any of the components.  It then requires me to go through and un-check many of them to get a usable view so I can expand the "Description" or "Comment" columns which is where I find what I'm looking for 99% of the time.  Sometimes there are over a hundred columns all checked and I have to get rid of 90 of them.  Can this search window just default to showing only the first few columns and let the user check which ones he/she wants to view.

Thanks for anyone else's input!

just added the rotation bug again to this thread, as well as liking all the other people that stated this, Holy cow, that is a bad one!!! I have been using CS for a couple years and like it (seems like…

This is the only thing I have run into that I felt really needed fixed in a hotfix. I wonder why it is taking so long and why they are not communicating.

It also looks like in one of the early versions of CS there was an option to right click on a component in the Altium Vault and "Clone" the part which will allow you to easily use that part and modify it to keep in your own library.  This would be very handy to have again so I can have a custom version of a part if my design house has specific requirements for a part I use, or if there is a very similar part in the vault as a part that is not that I want to use.  I could then copy the vault part to my own library and do some small changes to make it the new part.

As I understand it from other comments, the only way to do this now is to have a project open that you can drag the Vault component into.  Then you can have your library open with an empty footprint you created and copy the footprint of the Vault part and past it into your new footprint.  But I don't think the schematic editor will allow you to do this.  So for the moment I copy the footprint and start from scratch when making the component layout.

    Came up with another one...

When you click on a design rule error in the Design Rule Verification Report, it appears as though the software intends on zooming into the infraction, but it just zooms to a standard location and you have to hunt for it.  If it would actually zoom to the infraction, that would save a lot of time

I don't believe they should be adding anything beyond fixing what they broke from V1.3 in the hotfix.

Any added "features" will delay this hotfix, and the hotfix will turn into another release.

My current option in V1.4 is broken beyond being a usable release (due to component rotation bug.)  So I actually expect they would have fixed that and maybe the 3D board outline issue and released it by now.

You have a good point about quick release items needing to be focused on major problems.  Some of the problems I list are things I think have a chance of being a very minor bug that was introduced which would take just a couple lines of code to fix.

Regarding your problems with v1.4...  James Harriman suggested in my question about the board shape from 3D body to install the old version 1.3 in parallel with my 1.4 installation and that worked well.  The two versions actually seem to work well together on my PC.  It will get me by until another update.

+1 for component rotation bug - makes product practically unusable

Hitting the [ESC] key in component properties in PCB view opens the component parameters dialogue rather than closing the dialogue.

Repour Polygons on Error seems to be missing from the PCB Designer properties page despite being referenced in the dialogue that pops up when a polygon pour needs repoured due to a change

Let's add Paul Mathews' discovery that CS outputs noncompliant ODB++ files with filenames containing forbidden uppercase letters: https://www.element14.com/community/thread/59889/l/odb-output-formatting-issues-in-cs

    This should definitely be fixed.

Fixing the ODB++ formatting issue could be as simple as editing some script file. We can hope...
