All I want is a resistor....

Sparkylabs
Sparkylabs over 8 years ago

I am a bit baffled by the total lack of basics. I can install all sorts of manufacturer specific libraries but if I want a resistor, or capacitor of other generic part I need to create it from scratch ? As CS is supplied by Farnell why is there not a basic library of what they supply available ?

The whole library part of CS seems to be a joke, and no I have no interest in the vault, it is impossible to search very hard and slow to use and not available if I am off line. Many parts are missing from the vault, there is a multicomp section (yes farnells own brand) bit it has just one part in it............ am I missing something big or did i just waste £805?

Hi John. Not sure if you are aware but in addition to the online Vault a vast collection of component libraries are available from the Altium website. Although not as convenient to access as the online…

Place a part. Select Choose on the window that opens. Browse libraries will open. Choose Miscellaneous Devices. Should find the basic devices there.

I am afraid that does not count as a libray, it has 3x 1K resistors, most through hole, one small SMD and one large SMD, not helpful. So I have to create every component from scratch, We are talking about here for every value:

    Package size option: x2 (1205, 0805)

    Tolerance: x2 (1%, 0.1%)

every resistor value and that is 4 options of every value. I'm offering to prostitute myself to farnell and lock myself into their brand if they supply a library, apparently beyond selling CS they have missed every other marketing opportunity. Oddly I have a farnell datapack installed somewhere but no idea what to do with it and it sounds like I have to manually create a library of parts to which apply that data.

    Hi Simon,

It will probably be worth while to make your own libraries with the common components you use.  Takes a few hours to get a bunch of standard components built but you can make them how you like.  I have libraries for resistors, capacitors, diodes that I commonly use.  It will be good to get proficient in making your own components quickly.  Let me know if you need any help.

Libraries are almost always an issue when starting out with a new CAD package. I am yet to find a design package that handles the issue effectively, though the task would be gargantuan given the sheer number of different components out there. It even drove me to creating an Upverter account to work on smaller projects simply for the parts database and concierge service.

Our company tends to ditch libraries and create all components from scratch. The time spent is offset against CAD parts that work to our spec.

Well when it comes to resistors I am not that particular, oh well, lets hope I don't spend a year using it only to find it's been a waste of time, I have just spent a year with proteus only to get fed up having only spent time making libraries......

I think I'm missing something. The symbol is what you need for the schematic. Are you looking for the footprints?

Both! and 3D models too, I can make them myself.

I attempted to use the built-in libraries at first but got frustrated so I ended up making my own parts.  I make everything I use now.  Fusion360 is a great tool for making 3D parts.  Solidworks is good too but a little antiquated.  It's always nice to have a step file to import into CS so you can verify that the component matches the footprint.  And what is best is that when you make your own 3D model, you can personalize it.  Here's an example I did of the SMD resistors that I continually use.  image

I'm not sure what would be antiquated about solid works. I use solid edge that is in a similar vein but they are full blown 3D CAD packages not made for easily turning out standard parts. Indeed in proteus I was also building up a collection of 3D models all with my company name on them.

To add insult to injury farnell still supply eagle parts libraries that can't be opened in CS, is farnell sure it wanted to sell eagle off ? they seem desperate to get all those customers back now at my expense.
