Question about something lingering on my mind for a long time and if it would be possible to build such a smartphone i picture in my head.......

Hello Community image

I dont know if there is already a thread about my lingering thought so i hope you all could still bear with my inability to use the search function properlyimage Therefore i apologize in advance image

since the dawn of time....well at least for me image...i hated and still hate that ongoing trend with buliding a smartphone that has a non removable battery. Of course in the end i realize that with modern batterys which you can shape in any form whatsoever it is more efficient to let the battery always be integral. Not to speak about that with being waterproof it would be not so easy if the battery should be removable. But since the release of moto mods and the motorola z3 play i have a funny thought on my mind and it is literally killing me because i couldnt find anything about it via internet search and it feels like it wouldnt be to difficult or even is already possible to realize my thought. So i would be really thankfull if you could help me out with this one image

Soooo finally getting to my question image. There are battery mods for the z play smortphones which you can easily clap on your motorola and easily remove again if you want to. With this method the mod only really function as a charger for your non-removable battery and with that gives your smartphone more juice for the day. BUT isnt it possible to programm and make a mod like that but with the intention of not being a charger for the non-removable battery but being the main battery altogether ? That way instead of powering up the battery which powers up and runs the smartphone that mod would directly be the powersource for the smartphone. But this time not on the inside the smartphone but on the outside dividing the Smartphone into two easily separable units but by claping them together again making a fully usable and powered up Smartphone. Isnt that possible to do ? That would be so awesome if it is possible. just think about it. You could easily change your main battery without poking up your smartphone just by removing the mod. You would retain the waterproofing on both battery and main smartphone. And the best thing about it because the main power is the Mod itself the other main smartphone unit wouldnt need a charge port for the battery making more room for other possible parts being build in and also with the non-removable battery out of the main smartphone unit making even more room which could be used otherwise. For me that would be a dream come true. I would get my removable battery feature without someone else loosing features like being waterproff and so on. Just thinking about it makes me giggle image.

So my dear community i would really appreciate your thoughts on that matter image. Isnt it possible to do so ? Or is it really too difficult to make it work image ?.

Thank you all in advance image

They don't work that way for a reason. Try removing the battery of a Motorola phone with a removable battery while plugged in and you'll see what happens. The system crashes. Let's say your phone's internal battery is at zero then you slap on a mod and it powers the phone directly instead of charging the battery. If you take it off or it falls off, your system crashes. That would cause much more headache and pain for users then using the mod as it was implemented to charge the battery. They could design a Moto Z phone with a removable battery instead of a non-removable one but I don't see them going that route.

    To add to Stuart's post,

Consider if you remove the battery from your laptop while it is on (and no longer plugged in) do it once your computer will boot up, microsoft may do some checks and blammo your in windows. (windows has to be the easiest example here as it does not like anything out of the ordinary)

Do it numerous times and your in for a treat. Your operating system will not know what to do, if you are lucky it will boot into those same checks and just do a scan maybe try to reorder or potentially require you to goto a previous known good backup. (For those who have the backups activated).. IF it was done enough times you may be better off reloading the drive to get rid of the errors...

Cell phone would be similar. the operating system needs to be shut down properly to keep all the data in the correct locations.

Older cell phones, Motorola razr, motorola startac, had a battery that clipped on the outside, but had much less of an operating system as they were cell phones, and not pocket computers that can also make phone calls

Thank you both for your reply image

So if i understand correctly what Matt Sebok and you say is that the problem would be that it wouldnt be safe enough for the smartphone because when something happens and the ,,Battery" comes off, the system of the smartphone wouldnt be able to take it in the long run and will crash constantly. Or even everytime reset to the default settings with everything wiped. Of course you both are right in that regard. If the system is abruptly disconected from the source without any warning or beforehand preperation, in this case shutting down the device, you are definitely in for a treat.  Unfortunatly i never had a z-play with the mods so i dont know how durable and liable they are when something unexpected happens. But wouldnt it be easy to prevent such things ? I mean you just need to tweak the design of the smartphone a little to make this battery stick and not falling off. Of course while still being easy to switch if needed. There are also possibilites without the neded to tweak the design.  For example many phones which you buy are coming with a free transparent case in which you can snap your phone in. This would easy prevent the battery from falling off and also defend the phone when falling down. Or for example for my phone i have bought a booklet case or however its called and it not only looks good and protects but it also holds my phone tightly without any fear of detatching something even if i would have a battery on the back only holding on those magnets from those mods. image

So what are your thoughts about it ? Wouldnt that solve the problem or did i forgot something. Really curious for your opinion image

The Moto Mod design has the external battery charge the phone's internal battery. That is the framework you need to realize when designing your own mods. To have a better understanding of the mod system please read the https://developer.motorola.com/documentation/system-architecture

Unfortunately i am not even close in being versed with programming and so on. That is also why i just asked of curiosity and started this conversation that if it would be possible to do this Battery idea of mine or not image.
And right now i only know of problems in regard to seperating the Battery from the system. Which shouldnt be a really big problem to figure out. Especially when there were bigger challenges in the early smartphone developement. At least i think so but if i am wrong feel free to tell me image.

I read that article and stumbled there into this sentence ,,...a Moto Mod will behave in a manner that is indistinguishable from a native hardware component on the Moto Z. For example, a Moto Mod speaker system will appear to Android just like any other integrated audio device, and participate in and follow the operating system’s standard audio-routing logic.". And if it is true then a Battery Mod will be also like an integrated Battery. Which would mean the real integrated Battery could be removed while letting the Battery mod be the Main Powerunit. Its a little bit like the Indiana Jones movies or any other ones of that kind where you need to replace the treasure from the socket with something of equal value like in the movies the weight for that the system will not realize any change made to it image. Just a little anecdote imageimage. Of course the real moto mod is differently programmed so one should of course change something in the smartphone and the mod for it to work. But what exactly and if it is really that way i dont know in the slightest so sorry if i just speak nonsense. In the end i only use mototrola phone as an example for how i would like a smartphone to be and one could make completely new smartphone while working for that endproduct. Not that i want them to tweak the existing moto mods and smartphones so that they could be used that way image
