    Dear Mr Setsuda

    Pulse discarge capacitor

I have an application where I need to charge a large capacitor to 96V and then discarge it across a low resistance soleniod, this will not happen very often.

    I am thinking of using a Panasonic capacitor EETUQ2C272EA (2700uF, 160V).

Is there a different capacitor that would be more suitable for this kind of pulse discharge application?

    Kind regards

    Nico Rotolo

    Hi Nico

Thank you for your mail, Snap in capacitors are generally the best solution  for charge/discharge application and the question might be, which capacitance, Ripple, etc. you require?

    Kind regards

    Hello Setsuda

Sorry for my delay in replying.

I have a very simple application and I would like some advice on what type of capacitor to use.

My application needs a 2700uF capacitor that is charged to 96V. Once charged, the capacitor is discharged (using a fast thyristor) into a very low resistance (almost a short circuit).

This 'firing' of the capacitor will only happen occasionally.

I understand that some types of capacitors have a very short lifetime if they are used in this way, is an electrolytic capacitor suitable for this application?.

    Regards

    Nico

    Hello Nico san

I may not reply your question clearly,

    But here is My comment.

    1) If you need really 2700uF capacitence by one pieces,

You must use Lytic cap for your application,

        but As you mentinoned,

There is life time matter.Lytic cap has life end due to using Lytic cap.

You do not mentioned how offen this application must do 'firing'.

If you send this kind of information with this capacitor demand qty/Year in your application,

(For example How offen per year?

         Ripple current?

Your ambient temparatuer for life time calculation?

What is your life time request for this capacitor?)

I will ask engineer to send rough Life time refference value.

    2) If you can use 2700uF by many pieces,

You can use Film cap by parallel conection.

Life time matter is almost no problem basically,

        But you must use Film cap 4.7uF x 500-600pcs or 6.8uF x 400pcs-500pcs.

I think that is not realistic.

But your application needs big capacitance.

It may be not good for you

        but please see attached file.

Attahced file is film cap ECWF(A) Series for ignitor and our data sheet.

(We Panasonic will add this new series to Farnel web soon.)

    Thanks

    Setsuda

    Dear Setsuda

Thank you for the info, I think that I will use an electrolytic capacitor.

I am going to build only 10 units, the lifetime of the capacitor is not a big concern because the capacitor will be fired only occasionally (four times a month) and it will be at room temperature.

    Thanks again for your time.

    Kind regards

    Nico
