Funway into SME (Surface Mount Electronics)

Hey Guys,

I just wanted to let everyone know I have started a new video series called “Funway into SME” (Surface Mount Electronics)

What I am doing is going through the old DSE Funway volumes 2 and 3 and converting them into modernised versions of the original projects, including updating the circuit’s to remove components difficult to source. And also add some power efficiency.

As the series progresses I’ll post a link to each video in the series. I have even had to create my own funway videos to provide the needed building blocks for the more advanced projects, due to changing the way components interact in the old circuits.

Part of the series is first showing how to hand solder Surface Mount Components then progress onto using stencils and board heater/reflow ovens.

And as each project video gets released, I'll be running a give away competition for each one of the projects!

The introductory video can be found here

So the first project video is up its a long 48 minute video, but over the next few days I'll also release it as 3 separate videos for those that want to watch separate sections at a time.

The above video will also be released as a three part video over the course of the week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday check back on the play list for when they go live youtube.com/playlist

Project 2 - The Ding Dong Doorbell: Part 1 is now live, the assembly and testing video will be out once the components arrive from element14

Hi Paul, Here is some feedback: * The intro sequence could be shortened. 10 seconds feels too long to hold people's attention. Maybe just display your title for 10 seconds but start talking after just…

Thanks for sharing this, I have never read *** Smiths's books so I'm interested to learn more!

There is at least one volume on archive.org.

    Great work!

I'm not sure about 'like' but I can understand why the authors name got caught here, I don't know when i'll reference that name again...

*** Smith (maybe it was because I had an extra s in Smith?)

I reached out to this person, they never responded, they don't even have a local number I could ring.  As I wanted to get their input, after my contact went radio silent.  I proceeded forward.

Their website isn't very helpful, and is vague:

The website is full of ads too. Pretty awful.

However, the last thing you want is for them to try to claim your work in a dispute over rights in the future. It would not be fun explaining to a judge how your work was inspired by, but was different, especially if you're using the name Funway. It wouldn't be fair on you but what is lawful, and what is judged, are not necessarily fair; that's just a fortunate outcome when they are.

Given that most beginners will never have heard of Funway (since that program ended more than a decade ago it seems?) it may be better to simply avoid potential trouble and give your series a completely different name (not even "Fun Way"), and besides you don't need to rely on the Funway circuits since most look quite generic and there will be plenty of other variations on the Internet.

I think it's restricting yourself unnecessarily to stick to Funway circuits, for no real benefit given that your audience will likely never have heard of Funway to begin with.

I understand your point, But its a start, I have all the documentation, so little design work is needed except for converting the circuits to SMD and making the needed design changes.  It's once the series is complete and I need to make more learning projects when the hard part starts.

But my ultimate goal is to try and use the old projects like building blocks to build bigger projects, but keep the series focused away from MCU (Plenty of Education resources), and focus primarily on Analogue and Digital electronics.

And to further add my parents lawyer advised me I can take out a trademark, as an ultimate legal protection, if the person in Sydney gets upset I'm stealing there thunder.
