Announcing the Raspberry Pi 5 with 16GB RAM

This morning we are excited to announce the Raspberry Pi 5 with 16GB of RAM

We first announced Raspberry Pi 5 back in the autumn of 2023, with just two choices of memory density: 4GB and 8GB.
Last summer, we released the 2GB variant, aimed at cost-sensitive applications. And today we’re launching its bigger sibling, the 16GB variant, priced at $120.

Why 16GB, and why now?

Raspberry Pi's Eben Upton Explains: image

" We’re continually surprised by the uses that people find for our hardware. Many of these fit into 8GB (or even 2GB) of SDRAM, but the threefold step up in performance between Raspberry Pi 4 and Raspberry Pi 5 opens up use cases like large language models and computational fluid dynamics, which benefit from having more storage per core.

And while Raspberry Pi OS has been tuned to have low base memory requirements, heavyweight distributions like Ubuntu benefit from additional memory capacity for desktop use cases.

The optimised D0 stepping of the Broadcom BCM2712 application processor includes support for memories larger than 8GB. And our friends at Micron were able to offer us a single package containing eight of their 16Gbit LPDDR4X die, making a 16GB product feasible for the first time."

Beelink do some amazingly priced NUCs too. We use them at work in some situations we have previously used a Pi. In fact we have an internal product where we use either. It's a touch-screen that allows presenters at conferences to control various things like video switching, asking for technical assistance, etc. If we want small and self-contained then the software runs on a Pi 3 with 7" touchscreen. I f we want something bigger with more features, we use a NUC and 14" widescreen touchscreen.

There are definitely situations that fit a NUC over a Pi or vice versa though. They're comparable in some ways but not in others.

At that price, I’d buy an Intel NUC.  Quick check on Amazon, Intel N150, 8 GB ram, $140.  That includes the power supply and a case. Apples vs. Oranges comparison, yes. Sure, no GPIO, but still useful for many things.

    Don’t get me wrong, I love my Pi 1, Pi 2, Pi 3, Pi 0, then 3b, 4, and 5.

I can see that it may suits some people perfectly, but once you start bumping the specs and price up that high it may be better to grab a cheap desktop PC.
