Dynamic DNS - open up your Pi's webserver to the World

My guide to opening your home Pi-based web server up to the world using Dynamic DNS. Might be useful to someone - I was trying to get the Raspcontrol project page on my Pi up so I can reboot from elsewhere!

 

I use ddclient and dnsdynamic.org to do it.

  • Shouldn't you use:

    use=web, web=myip.dnsdynamic.com        # get ip from server.

    as shown in the dnsdynamic.org/api.php page you referenced ? 

    If you use

    use=web, web=checkip.dyndns.org

    then you're reliant on dyndns.org which is a different service altogether.

     

    Can I also suggest that if you're using Raspcontrol and opening your system up to the internet at large you look into setting up https and blocking http ?

    It appears that Raspcontrol doesn't bother encrypting your username/password so anyone who can sniff the traffic could gain control of your Pi.

    Probably also a good idea to delete setup.php after you've created your password.
