Extra raspberry sauce: The great Raspberry Pi B+ giveaway

15 Jul 2014

You may have heard that there’s a new Pi in town. The Raspberry Pi B+ launched on July 14th 2014, the first major update to the credit card sized computer that changed so much in the world of electronics when it first launched two years ago.

We wanted to make sure that our element14 Community members and social media followers had the chance to be among the first to get their hands on it. So, we decided to give 100 away. We couldn’t just go out on the street and hand them out to anyone and everyone! We wanted to put the new Pis directly into the hands of our members and followers, on launch day, so we needed some kind of secret code!

That’s why early on the morning of the launch, we started spreading the word. On all of our social media channels we posted messages letting people know that there would be element14 ice cream huts in central London today. They were giving out free ice cream to everyone but, if you knew the secret code word, you could become the recipient of more than just a tasty treat. The first 100 people to find the element14 ice cream huts and ask for ‘extra raspberry sauce’ with their ice cream became some of the first people in the world to get their hands on a brand new Raspberry Pi B+. We tweeted using the hashtag #extraraspberry throughout the day, with these being a few of the best tweets and pictures.

Now, we appreciate that many of you couldn’t possibly get to central London with only a few hours notice (or even a few days). The element14 Community is global, so we want to give everyone the chance to get hold of a free Raspberry Pi B+ early on. For that reason, we’ve held back another 10 to give away. To be in with a chance of getting one, just comment on this blog post and tells us in under 50 words the first project you would put your new Pi B+ to use on. We’re especially interested in hearing about projects that make use of the new board’s better connectivity and power features.

Get commenting to enter and we'll pick the winners next Wednesday July 23rd at 9am UK time (Terms and Conditions apply)

i would use the pi to create a flood warning system, it would be put in areas at risk of flood and would measure water levels and trigger warning lights/triangles at roads leading to the area. it would also send an SMS message using an attached dialer to a central office that would use the information to flag warnings to satnav systems and google maps to provide up-to-date information about road closures and floods and allow you to reroute your journey.

The system would also send alerts to show the water level over and above normal levels, for example at fords in the road, so that you could assess whether the levels are suitable for you car to drive through but also to initiate road closure signs to prevent people trying to use the fords and damaging their vehicles.

The same distributed information could be used to allow councils to initiate flood defences or water rerouting in advance of the problem becoming affecting.

It would of course be solar powered using the same technology currently deployed for road signs, speed warnings etc.

Project: Portable Brain wave controlled wheel chair.

-Use the computational power to implement DSP algorithms along with Artificial Intelligence on RPi B+ to predict what motion person is thinking.

-Make the system battery operated to make it portable and light in weight which critical in a wheel chair.

-Connect external ADC in the extra pin headers for ultra high resolution.

B+ will be the home control hub to control lighting via Z-Wave, door lock via BLE and upload sensor data to the cloud via Wi-Fi. The extra USB ports have made it easier to plugin a USB Z-Wave controller, a CSR 4.0 BLE dongle and a WiFi dongle.

With the lower power consumption and larger number of ios and the additional USB ports, we can run it over a battery pack and possibly an arduino on one port, a mouse and keyboard and a wifi dongee on the last, along with a small home display to make a portable arduino programming and data acquisition system which can be connected to the Internet.

I want to use it as a portable arduino programming station and demo station. Put the entire thing in a custom case and you are good.
