Extra raspberry sauce: The great Raspberry Pi B+ giveaway

15 Jul 2014

You may have heard that there’s a new Pi in town. The Raspberry Pi B+ launched on July 14th 2014, the first major update to the credit card sized computer that changed so much in the world of electronics when it first launched two years ago.

We wanted to make sure that our element14 Community members and social media followers had the chance to be among the first to get their hands on it. So, we decided to give 100 away. We couldn’t just go out on the street and hand them out to anyone and everyone! We wanted to put the new Pis directly into the hands of our members and followers, on launch day, so we needed some kind of secret code!

That’s why early on the morning of the launch, we started spreading the word. On all of our social media channels we posted messages letting people know that there would be element14 ice cream huts in central London today. They were giving out free ice cream to everyone but, if you knew the secret code word, you could become the recipient of more than just a tasty treat. The first 100 people to find the element14 ice cream huts and ask for ‘extra raspberry sauce’ with their ice cream became some of the first people in the world to get their hands on a brand new Raspberry Pi B+. We tweeted using the hashtag #extraraspberry throughout the day, with these being a few of the best tweets and pictures.

Now, we appreciate that many of you couldn’t possibly get to central London with only a few hours notice (or even a few days). The element14 Community is global, so we want to give everyone the chance to get hold of a free Raspberry Pi B+ early on. For that reason, we’ve held back another 10 to give away. To be in with a chance of getting one, just comment on this blog post and tells us in under 50 words the first project you would put your new Pi B+ to use on. We’re especially interested in hearing about projects that make use of the new board’s better connectivity and power features.

Get commenting to enter and we'll pick the winners next Wednesday July 23rd at 9am UK time (Terms and Conditions apply)

I was at Westminster very recently I missed this by a week! I hope you got to do some touristy stuff afterwards too. The weather was nice - London and the team looks good!

Pick me. I am the person who seeing images an IRC chat user posted after being supplied a Model B+ in error, decided to spread the word.

I had no idea there was a law, thou shall not disrespect the Foundation, live and learn I guess.

I use RPi for web cams running motion, nfs root and the watchdog... The RPi seems to be inherently unstable so will not pursue this as a commercial reality.

I am making a weather station with a RPi as a receiving station. MC9S08QG8 used to gather data and send via nRF24 link.

Next on the list is some home automation.

So I would like a new B+ to add to my nine model B's and two camera modules, seven and two cams purchased via E14.

Considering I have all I need at this point I am not going to buy a model B+ just to see what it is like.

No doubt the "Foundation" would hate it if I get a free model B+ from E14.

Banned for life from the Foundation forums and the Foundation controlled Freenode IRC chat channel #raspberrypi.

Op rikkib of ##raspberrypi_relaxed Freenode chat channel. Drop by and have a chat with the jerk, James Hughes words, the Foundation loves to hate.

E14 service is awesome and beats the other NZ commercial supplier hands down.

Even though kit often comes from Australia it still arrives next day more than not.

The Pi is a valuable educational tool. My daughter would love some 'Extra Raspberry Sauce' for our project. She loves fish and learning animal husbandry. Our project would automate a tropical aquarium with a feeder, ph sensor, humidity sensor, camera, with all outputs and controls accessible via webpage and GSM.

If I were to win a Pi, I'd use it for my 4H project; an ultra mobile pc, with a HD screen and a 3D printed case.

I am planning to build a digital sheet music with 21" touchscreen and built in battery/stand, and would love the new Pi for the project!
