System to remotely control and monitor Raspberry Pis without needing VPN, static IP or DynDNS. Feedback please?

Hi,

I'm building a platform (www.dataplicity.com) that lets you monitor your Raspberry Pi's vitals (through a pre-set dashboard), control its GPIOs remotely through a web browser or a mobile device, and remotely connect to your Pi with an SSH-like Remote Shell without need for VPN, static IP, port forwarding or DynDNS.

The system is far from finished, but I want to see if it is something that people would find interesting and want to use.

Would love to hear what you all think.

Thanks!

Sorry, I missed your DOCS link above... I could not find a link on the site... I will have a look and try to resolve the problem. Thanks.

I gave it a try. The installation went pretty smooth. I was able to access the shell on my pi. The install changed the user to dataplicity and when I use sudo I cant figure out the password. Tried the password mentioned at the end of the installation, password for the login on the site plus some others, and nothing. After I reboot the pi, I could not get the GUI, just a blinking cursor on the top left corner. Tried reboot holding shift... same thing. I can still access the pi shell on the dataplicity site, but not knowing the sudo password I can't do anything. You should have a help page or forum in order to get feedback from users. Also an uninstall script would be nice. I don want to discourage you from this project, which I thing is good - with some more functionality... Check out Blynk - it is a similar idea image

That's an interesting idea, I've never tried it on a Yun!  Thinking about it the RPi installer might fluff if you run it on something other than a Pi, and the GPIO specific bits won't work, but if you can get it to install then the terminal part should work (in theory).  I will be preparing a standardized Linux variant of the one-line installer sometime after New Year but if you are feeling adventurous you might be able to hack it into working now.

If you were going down the completely custom device route (ie not using the RPI installer with remote shell etc), then yes, everything will work as it should: the dataplicity Core Python library is tested on generalised Linux.  Docs for that are here: https://docs.dataplicity.com/ There's also an example here: http://dataplicity.com/get-started/raspberry-pi/ (sorry the example needs a bit of updating, you might need to use your imagination a bit).
