What is Pi Day?

You have probably seen the words Pi Day all over your social media accounts, and while many people know and celebrate Pi Day, there are others who don't understand why there is a day for Pi.

Pi Day is celebrated on March 14, which when abbreviated as a numerical date in the US comes out as 3.14 which is also the basic given value of Pi or "The ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter." The value of Pi is irrational so it actually goes on forever without repeating. The first ten digits are 3.141592653 which also works out to the date & time 3.14.15 9:26:53 or March 14, 2015 at 9:26 & 53 Seconds. That makes this year's PiDay a once in a century event, as the year abbreviation works perfectly as the fourth & fifth digit.

So, why celebrate Pi? Well, Pi is used extensively in math & science which affects all of us! In addition it happens to be Albert Einstein's birthday (born in 1879). With the launch of the Raspberry Pi single board computer another reason to celebrate Pi has been added. Also, a lot of people love to eat pie on Pi Day too image

There are now events around the world celebrating Pi Day including a few Maker Faires including one that element 14's sister company, MCM Electronics, will be at: the AFRL Maker Fest at the Wright Brothers Institute in Dayton, OH
