Computer Build Project

Usually the value of desktop PCs drops loads, I would probably have trouble giving away a machine here, even though it may be usable but old.

Another option is a Pi 3 - by some accounts it is usable as a desktop machine although it is not a compete replacement. By the way computers are changing, and the majority of computers out there in the world are no longer desktop machines, but instead are microcontrollers running machines. Soon they will be communicating to each other and doing more. That would be an area to investigate if you're interested.

I'll have to look into that idea. I do like the sound of it. I have heard of raspberry pi but never to use it in a desktop.

     The gofundme requests I have seen have been more humanitarian like a car accident leaves someone with hospital bills that cannot be paid. But not like I want a Ferrari and cannot make enough. When I wanted a 10 speed bicycle, my parents had a suggestion. "go get a job". I see you like fishing. Have you considered something along a guide? Use your abilities and I bet you can come up with more(better) ideas and have fun too.

Not a bad idea many make a steady penny from Guiding or using their hobby/skills in a proffitable fashion.

Sounds like he's unlikely to make his money but maybe get something more useful if he wants to take it up!

Yes I understand that GoFundMe is definitely used for the less fortunate; however, they all have one goal, to raise money. Frankly I am raising money to aid in my personal education. Computer design and engineering is the field that I am interested in; unfortunately though, my high school does not offer any classes of this discipline.

I am currently enrolled in school and for the past 4 months I have spent all my time in the evening in a wrestling room. Consequently I have had no time to work. The guiding business is a great idea, and I did have one for sometime when I was younger. However, in order to guide people you are required by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department to have a guiding licence. This is very hard to get and very expensive. It would not be worth it for me go through the troubles to get a license when I have a full time job in the summer and no real time to take people fishing.

I am therefore at the moment I am stuck trying to fund raise for myself.

Computers are not designed like this though : (

It is a system of 'standards' that means that (say) a motherboard and a hard drive can connect together, but that is more of an 'integration' exercise. By just integrating, knowledge is learnt this is true, but not knowledge in the area of how to design computers. By the time

you'll understand this from a high level (in a few years from now perhaps if you continue your studies in this field), your machine would

be outdated.

I know times change, but I got accepted to a university partly on the strength of being able to explain how a light-bulb works! i.e. super basic science at one level but the answer can be quite deep (ask your physics teacher). But also partly by being able to explain at a high level how an instruction is fetched by a CPU and executed, which can be explored with hardware like the 'Pi and Arduino.

There are reasons why physics, math and science/technology subjects are taught at schools instead of how to integrate a PC: the skills you'll learn will allow you to design the computers for the next generation. It might be interesting to work on the current generation PCs, but it is also exciting creating the machines of the future, so definitely worthwhile staying focussed on the core subjects too..

     I work in the computer field since before the PC. Yes I know I am a dinosaur. But knowledge is the difference of sticking a few things together and do this on a Dell assembly line or designing the next generation of USB bus architecture. I choose the later and never looked back. A true advancement in this field is micro electronics and the people who understand the workings. Unless you happen to get lucky and find a Wozniak around you and you become the "vision guy". But even Jobs had a well rounded idea of electronics. Take this with a grain of salt. I would not want to be the person who follows a recipe, but a person who changes and rebuilds the recipe into a better cake.
