Leveraging very mature HDD technology, based off of the WD Blue slim drive.

Actually means:

We had many unsold WD blue drives in inventory and hired this fancy marketing guy to off load inventory.

You might be right there they also have a PIDrive Kit… that is 1TB .

Probably better off with a 128GB USB stick the current draw will be much less and it will be smaller and I assume more rugged.
Yes I know the drive has higher capacity but after 128GB or so you may be better off getting your data off to somereal computer on the network rather than exposed on the RPI

The link in the article seemed to take me to a US store, where they appeared to be in stock. I don't think I'll get one, but I thought it was interesting that vendors outside of the Pi space would be getting involved.

As you say, it's probably a marketing guy.

Also, it's hard to tell, but it almost looks like that drive has a usb 3 port right on the main board.
