Has anyone heard of Raspberry Pi, new lowcost mini PC (Due out Feb 2012)?

I recently heard about this product from a colleague here at element14 and curious to hear if any of you have either?  If you haven't perhaps your kids have? image

A description from the company describes it as:

"The Raspberry Pi is a credit-card sized computer that plugs into your TV and  a keyboard. It’s a capable little PC which can be used for many of the things  that your desktop PC does, like spreadsheets, word-processing and games. It also  plays high-definition video. We want to see it being used by kids all over the  world to learn programming."

I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on the product as it sounds like a game changer in the computer world.

Here's their Twitter account and website if you'd like to check out more about it:

Thanks for your thoughts and comments as always!

Touch Screens are usually connected over USB, aside from proprietary ones.  So as long as you can get the right drivers then you can usually just connect one and calibrate before using it.

There are kits for External monitors that would be ideal, others may require soldering...

Many touchscreen are using LVDS and the Raspberry Pi has a DSI interface, but some people/companies are working on a DSI to LVDS adapator and plan to provide a LCD Touchscreen kit for the Raspberry Pi.

i'm really thinking about cost here, so i guess we'll have to see what the dsi to lvds adapters cost

which was kind of why i posted hereas i thought soome here might have an idea about what would be involved/cost

or if there was anyway of hacking something together from existing products...

The DSI to LVDS adapter is actually for LCDs!  LVDS is predominantly used for the LCD and not the touch screen.  The touch screen part is usually connected separately and it's usually over USB.  Form factor is just over either a ZIF connector, 5P/4P internal connectors like used by basic webcams and BT modules in laptops, or just soldered directly.

While cost will depend on your set up, with variables like different size screens, different size touch screens, single touch versus multi-touch, and internal vs external setups.

If price is a concern then the smaller you can go the better, touch screens can get very expensive with larger screens, but laptop sizes 12.1" and smaller are usually fairly affordable.  While you can just get a touch screen kit and add it to an existing LCD display...
