Element 14 Raspberry Pi bundles/accessory pack

The Element 14 bundles/accessory pack for the Raspberry Pi seem a little strange to me. The wi-fi dongle seems useful, but no doubt all of them could be easily purchased separately elsewhere (or indeed individually at Farnell/Element 14). However, my main concern is the a very obvious item that most users would need, namely a case, *isn't* in the bundles/accessory pack at all.

It seems to me that the big aftermarket accessory for the RP would be a case, since its probably going to have be custom designed for the positions of the ports, so nothing obvious exists right now that could act as an RP case. Like all accessories for the RP, it would have to be pretty cheap too.

Well it would be nice to have a case, but what purpose does it serve ?. There isn't any lethal electricity, there isn't an on/off switch, the interface sockets are different from each other.

From the educational point of view it's probably a good idea to show all the components as it helps people understand the component parts and the extra bits you may need to convert it into a working system.

The idea behind RPi is that clever people design stuff around the basic computer, this includes a case. Personally, when I manage to get one of these things, it will going inside my ancient Acorn Risc PC; in part just as homage to where this all began.

    A case can

    - prevent accidental shorts of the pins on the bottom of the board

    - reduce the chance of the board being dragged around by the cables

    - mount the board on the back of the monitor, or up against the wall

    - may be even a power switch

    - easier to carry around (try put the bare board in your backpack)

    - may be to house usb hub for expansion

Of course, a transparent case would be nice - to show off how simple the device is.

A case that includes a battery pack would be great too with a couple of holes and a velcro strap?

My vote would be a HDMI cable and as micro USD power supply. Any self respecting geek will have a USB keyboard and mouse.image

I dont know what it says about me but I have evey thing I need to start playing when the Rpi arrives in my junk box.image

Going to make my own case from Poly Card, At least that way I can make it up to the dimensions I want/need & then just airbrush a nice finish image... That's the theory anyway image

I actually like that there is no case from a developer point of view. Of course when i get one I will make my own custom case for it. That is going to be half the fun. No case i think gives it more flexability. You also don't have to feel like you paid for a shell you dont want too.

I was reading up on the RP and their site says that it will have a case for the in class units meant for teaching with in schools. I think it would be neat if it had a clear case made of plastic, polycarbonate, or maybe even plexiglass. I will def be ordering one of these and attempting to make a somewhat tablet like device with a cheap usb tablet keyboard and a micro mouse I have. Along with a 5in back up camera screen. Everything should run on 5v or 12v so I will probalby use a 12v source (maybe 3 lithium cells) and the circuitry from one of those 12v to usb adapters meant for in the car. Should be interesting. It would be nice to have something I can just keep in my locker at school and pull out in the morning or after school to surf the web.

    Matty,

CPC offer two different bundles to try and address the issues detailed above.  For the technogeek who has most of the required accessories knocking about from previous projects / dead phones etc we offer the Starter Kit which is fairly bare bones but contains the Pi, a microUSB PSU, a case and an SD Card with Raspbian pre-installed...

    http://cpc.farnell.com/raspberry-pi/rpi-b-kit1/raspberry-pi-model-b-basic-starter/dp/SC12764?Ntt=SC12764

For someone who just wants to get started from scratch then we offer the PlugNPlay Kit which contains the Pi, a USB mouse, USB mini keyboard, USB hub, microUSB power supply, HDMI lead and a Wifi dongle.

We deliberated long and hard about adding a case but we thought that the choice of crust for your Pi was a personal choice, so we would let customers choose whichever one they preferred from the range of cases we offer
