Pi CPU 20% slower than BeagleBoard? Why does Raspberry Pi cost more here?

What do you all think about this comment on the BeagelBoard BeagelBoard / BeagleBone BeagleBone vs the Raspberry Pi???

    In my opinion the two boards are targeted @ two different audiences.

    The test was implemented against a much older BeagleBoard that is running

    @500 Mhz, the BeagleBone is running @720 Mhz.

    For me, I own the BeagleBone, not because it will run 20% or more faster.

    I need all the I/Os I can get.

     

    Don't get me wrong, I am expecting my RPi soon, it is so affordable so why the hell not.

     

    RPi is open source software but proprietary hardware. "order to get Broadcom to sell you the chips directly you would need to buying a very large number plus sign Non disclosure agreements etc"

    In contrast, BeagleBone open source software and hardware.

  • It was the extremely low price of the Pi which made it the worldwide phenomenon that it is.  Nothing else but price mattered, nothing.  There has been no shortage of better computing devices around over the years, but only a revolutionary price point like $25 creates explosions of interest like this did.  (It happened before too, recall the "$100 computer for the 3rd world" of the OLPC.)

     

    And perhaps it will happen again ... "the $10 computer", anyone? image

     

    But I have to agree with coder27 that the quoted "20%" difference in CPU performance has to be completely wrong, it just doesn't seem to be in the right ballpark for the Pi's ARM1176JZFS versus the BeagleBone's Cortex-A8.

     

    As Anandtech point out, the difference is 40% just on instruction code density alone, even without considering other performance benefits that come from the Cortex-A8's more modern architecture -- http://www.anandtech.com/show/2798/5  .
