Pi CPU 20% slower than BeagleBoard? Why does Raspberry Pi cost more here?

What do you all think about this comment on the BeagelBoard BeagelBoard / BeagleBone BeagleBone vs the Raspberry Pi???

""In a recent interview with Linux User & Developer, Raspberry Pi developer Eben Upton got a chance to talk about the performance of the upcoming SoC that is due out later this month.

“Raspberry Pi, in terms of multimedia, outperforms any other dev board in existence – which is nice,” explained Eben, “In terms of general purpose computing, it’s got this 700MHz ARM11, and our benchmark shows it’s about 20 per cent slower than a BeagelBoardBeagelBoard for general purpose computing. But, you know, it’s a quarter of the price.”"" source http://bit.ly/xYpCry

    I'm very happy with that:

Its all in what you want to use the board for. I believe both boards have advantages. The best part about the pi is the price, IMO.

I read the article. Very promosing. But, i would like to see comparison lists against those called "any other". Saying something does not make it true.

Folks, I'm going to take Eben up on that one,  I can think of some tasty $1000 dev boards that it might just give it a run... but certainly not on price/performance.

In our design aim was fast enough, fastest wasn't.  The speedy GPU is nice but neither that or the processor speed were as important as the price point and feature set for our target market.

Hmmm will have to talk to Eben about overclocking...

The 20% figure makes no sense at all.  I'm sure a fair benchmark or set of

benchmarks would show a much larger figure, based on the clock rate differences,

the instruction-set architecture differences, and the memory differences (including caches).

I guess the real question is what are you going to develop and design using the Pi or a BeagelBoard

Do you feel the Pi is a "development" tool or would the BeagelBoard be more realistic to use for developing a new end product?

I am curious which kit would make the most sense to use for example when designing a media-center aimed at mass production & commercial sales?

    Hello Rico,

I think the Beagleboard or possibly the Beaglebone would make by far the best basis for a proposed mass production development - the Beagles are supported by TI for exactly that purpose and are not hampered by secret data sheets and other odd restrictions. There is a wide selection of support software and BSPs (board support packages) already available.

If you plan mass production (100k+)  the cost of the development boards is trivial  - a fraction of 1% of the total development costs you should anticipate.

Thanks Michael for the response....  I am pleased to see Farnell also has the BeagleBoneBeagleBone on stock...  I will start looking into it in more detail.   Regards!

Just wanted to share an interesting video on the BeagleBone....

Texas Instruments is launching a $5 ARM Cortex-A8, it's re-optimized for specific tasks, it can go in tablets, but it can also be used in industrial and medical applications, and certain custom uses, where this can be thought of as a high-end microprocessor yet very low cost, it starts at $5 for ordering

Sorry I dont understand the question.

Why does Raspberry Pi cost more THAN WHAT ?

I ordered a Raspberry Pi from Element14 in Australia for $41 including delivery and tax.

    Before tax and shipping

Mfg Part No: BEAGLE XM  Price: $424.16

Mfg Part No: BB-BONE-000  Price: $110.41

Unless the pricing is different in other parts of the world, I'm at a loss.
