Memory + SD Cards

Former Member
Former Member over 13 years ago

So, I have been looking at at a few videos for this, and although I'm no expert, im certainly enjoying reading about it, and it seems like a massive breakthrough in... Well, every section of computing - there will be new operating systems for this at some point, maybe a new programming language that is unique to the Raspberry Pi, and of course it is redefining hardware.

My only problem is memory - i have been looking around, and i can't find any SD cards with more than 8GB memory, which fairly worries me, because i don't want to invest in an external harddrive for this. Am i not looking hard enough, or is this going to be our limit until the hardware for SD cards improves?
Also, if that is right, wouldn't it be easier, and more effective, to just use a memory stick and put it in a USB drive?

Thanks a lot,

Danny

    Danny,

A quick amazon.com search turned up this:

    http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Flash-Memory-SDSDB-032G-B35-Black/dp/B002G12OBO/ref=sr_1_4?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1331673894&sr=1-4

A 32Gb Sandisk Class 4 SDHC Card.  It also turned up some class 4 SDXC 64Gb cards (not sure if compatible). From what I understand, the 32Gb SDHC card would be compatible.

    Hope that Helps.

Edit: This is the U.S. amazon.com, I'm sure you could find something comparable for the UK. Sorry I didn't notice earlier.

    Danny,

http://www.mymemory.co.uk/SDHC might be a good place to start. Have seen som 64GB ones somewhere I'm sure

There must be loads of other sites.

    Regards

    Simon

If in the UK, you could try 7dayshop.com - class 4 16gig and class 4 32gig cards in stock - just ordered a couple.

Also ordered a memory card case for £2.69, which I think may work as a case for the Pi.

(I am not on commission, just a satisfied customer).

    Hey there Danny,

You can also do a quick search on Ebay there is a ton of 32G and 64G. I didnt search for any other sizes, but I am sur that the smaller ones are available there too. Just another option for ya to look at.

You might want to hold off purchasing a card until there is more compatibily information.  This wiki page is keeping track of models that work well or have known problems:

    http://elinux.org/RPi_VerifiedPeripherals#SD_cards

I believe that you can add general storage via USB, however the RPi will only boot from SD card.

    Cheers,

    Drew

But not all will work with the RPi, will they?

That is a great link if it will work, since its 32gb and only £17, but it isn't on the list on the Wiki that 'fustini' just posted, so i'm fairly uncertain.

I think your best bet would be to get a cheap 4Gb SD card for now. Then once the Raspberry Pi has had some time in the hands of the general public you could look into getting a larger one. Just to be on the safe side. If you're more ambitious, you could just go for the 32Gb and test it yourself, if it doesn't work you might be able to find another use for it?

I think the thing to remember is that the RPi is still so new that it's going to take time before there is a lot of documentation for compatibility (and potentially to discover work-arounds to make something compatible). Also, we're essentially the test audience before the academic release, so the idea is any problems we find can be fixed before it goes to the schools.

The discretion is yours, be safe and wait or be ambitious and take a chance.

Not much help, I know, but that's what it really seems to be coming down to for now.

Completely agree with Alexander on that one, get a smallish card now (4-8GB) and then wait for more general availability and any problems that may come out of the woodwork with larger / different types of cards before sinking any more money into a bigger card. There seems to already be some discussion around whether faster cards are completely compatible, so I guess as the pi finally gets into peoples hands it will get tested with a very wide range.

    Sounds good image

If i want to get it before it is fully available for educational uses and such, do i have to preorder it? Or will i be able to just buy it online as soon as there is some in stock?

Danny, I'd pre-order. I registered my interest and a week later got an email with a link to buy it. The expected ship date was originally August 1st, 2012 (ordered March 12th), but somehow has changed to July 13, 2012. With this kind of price and the amount of interest in it, expect there to be a waiting period, if you want to wait to buy it until it's at the point of being shipped immediately after purchase, you may end up waiting until next year.

Plus, what have you got to lose? They won't charge you until your item ships (they will get payment information though).
