Memory + SD Cards

Former Member
Former Member over 13 years ago

So, I have been looking at at a few videos for this, and although I'm no expert, im certainly enjoying reading about it, and it seems like a massive breakthrough in... Well, every section of computing - there will be new operating systems for this at some point, maybe a new programming language that is unique to the Raspberry Pi, and of course it is redefining hardware.

My only problem is memory - i have been looking around, and i can't find any SD cards with more than 8GB memory, which fairly worries me, because i don't want to invest in an external harddrive for this. Am i not looking hard enough, or is this going to be our limit until the hardware for SD cards improves?
Also, if that is right, wouldn't it be easier, and more effective, to just use a memory stick and put it in a USB drive?

Thanks a lot,

Danny

I would like to know if 128gb SD cards would work? (Don't know if they can be found under Class 10 though.)

Eben apparently said that there is a voltage issue with class 10 cards. several expert-wanabees like me think this is weird: the SD card specification says that cards are supposed to work at 3.3V and that's what the raspbery pi should be doing.

If Class 10 cards would be using another voltage, they would not be compatible with lots and lots of devices. Since I haven't heard about lots of devices not liking class 10 cards, I don't think they run at another voltage.

Anyway. Still there might be something voltage related. We'll figure it out eventually. If you're worried about throwing aaway money if the card cannot be used after all, don't buy it yet. Or get a few cheap USB SD card readers from china. They actually work pretty good. Then you might need an additional class-4 card in the RPI to boot from and then you can put the large files on the big SD card in the USB cardreader.

Good idea to wait until you have a Pi before you buy the 128Gb card - you'll know better if it might work and it'll probably cost less !

If you don't care about power a USB hard drive would be cheaper, bigger (capacity as well as size !) and faster.

Yes, the high capacity memory cards are more expensive so I think ill use a <32 GB Class 4 (ish) sd card. The class doesnt particularly matter for me but its a small shame. If i need more space I will use a External HDD. I also seem to remeber hearing somewhere that it might be possible for the External HDD to take over from the SD (With the OS). Although i have no idea how you would do that.

It's generally fairly easy, assuming you can change kernel command-line. You just change the 'root=' parameter.

Even if that turns out to be difficult on the RPi, having it remount root on the external drive from the startup scripts works, too. (As any NSLU2 owner can tell you...)
