Ship dates?

Former Member
Former Member over 13 years ago

So I just checked into my account online, and under Ship Date, for the Pi I ordered on 29 Feb., it says "30 March". I know there was some confusion over ship dates early on, so thought I'd ask - is this ship date shown in my account roughly accurate? I would be oh so happy to receive my Pi in a couple weeks.

Currently shipping dates are up in the air- re-work required on the boards as I'm sure you'll have seen elsewhere.

They did say elsewhere that they would try and keep shipping dates as close to those advertised as possible.

Not much help really sorry. My current ammusement is a small linux install running on a virtual machine on my desktop, kinda RPi flavour, or at least somewhere to start learning.

Wow, 30th March if true is good news.

As mentioned by Richard above, I thought all the dates were very much in the air due to the problems with the wrong network jack connector being used and also sourcing the number of  correct ones for all the orders they have outstanding.

I need to call Farnell, I placed a phone order and never got an account set up. Can't see mine being moved earlier though. image

Well, went to my Farnell Account and found the ship date had been taken out, called them and apparently it is because they are waiting for the re-tooled boards - they are chasing the foundation every day for an update and can't give a firm date at the moment (Unsurprisingly) - confirms what Richard says above.

At this point, I feel for Farnell, as they have taken this on and in the short term appear to have been stitched up a bit by the Foundation? I know in the long run they should make a profit out of the Pi, but it seems they have experienced a lot of short term pain and no doubt cost considering their website was DDoS'd on the 'launch' day. That and the fact that the faulty boards were discovered only after the agreement was struck seems a touch unfair.

I was under the impression that the two distributors (Farnell & RS) were arranging the manufacturing themselves, rather than through the Foundation, or is this not in fact the case?

I believe that is the case for any remaining orders, but I was under the impression that the first 10,000 (faulty ones) were manufactured under the guidance of the foundation, without any input from Farnell. It was only on the 'launch' day that the distribution deal with Farnell was announced and they took over production. I could of course be wrong, I'm starting to loose the plot a bit with it all !

Although I expressed my interest with Farnell / Element 14 through the special website they set up on the day of the launch (Like the one RS Components had), later that same day I discovered that someone found the Newark part ordering number for the raspberry pi, so I ordered it directly from Newark to avoid the extra $20 charge (For shipping from the UK, customs duty charges, etc). That may have changed with their new pricing policy announced a couple of days ago, although I do not know how they would circumvent the customs duty charges.

My original expected ship date was May 11th, but I checked it again today, and see that it has been moved up to April 2nd. With the Ethernet jack problems and the massive popularity of the device I do not have much confidence in the new date, but it certainly would be nice.

At the launch day (29.02) after ordering I received the final confirmation mail from Farnell with an attached PDF file containing estimated delivery information (16 April).

But if I look in my account, my orders, I don't see any shipping date in my Farnell account. The field is empty.

If talking about change of shipping date do you mean that you have received another mail with renewed estimated delivery date?

Let me clarify. I did not order through “Farnell” Element 14 because I would have had to pay a $20 surcharge to ship it directly to me in the United States. Instead I ordered through “Newark” Element 14 on the launch day instead, which is the US distributor; the device is being shipped to one of Newark's US warehouses and then shipped to me. I only have to pay standard shipping and taxes (No customs fees, etc). That said, Newark Element 14 sent me an email on March 1st that stated a ship date of May 11. Today I logged into my Newark account and that date had changed to April 2nd.

Where do you see the ship dates with Newark?  I ordered on the 29th as well at 8:25am. I got a message on the same day saying my ship date was 10 may. I haven't heard anything since and the order hisotry still shows "backordered".

@ Kevin Foss - I went to My Account->Order History and clicked the link in the PO Number column. On the resulting page, the column to the right of Status (which says "Backordered") has a column labelled Ship Date/Tracking. That's where I got the "Expected Ship Date" from.

And yes, I read about the issue with the first batch of boards, and the general confusion and flux in anticipated ship dates. Just wanted to compare notes with others. I appreciate everyone's feedback and at this point I'll just be happy to get my RPI whenever it arrives. I'd rather wait a bit and not get a unit with the wrong network jack connector.
